ParticipantThis may seem a silly question to most of you here, but I’ve only just started repairing dishwashers and other electrical equipment, I mainly do computer and electronic equipment but need a sideline 🙂
I got given a whirlpool ADP4501/5 and on the outside it looks in excellent condition, We were told that the mains water pipe had a fault and the water was cut off for a week while the water company did repairs,
The owners were on the main ring from the reservoir if that makes any sense, and the water pressure was very high, and once the water was turned back on and they filled the dishwasher to use, it flashed 4 times and refused to do anything elseso they bought a new one.
I cant verify there was only 4 flashes, if it was then this i “believe” is a drain problem, possibly to do with the pressure switch?
I cant verify it because I dont want to connect it up yet and this is where my question may appear to be a bit “silly”
Does anyone know what the hole/outlet on the LEFT side of the pic is?
its enhanced on the 2nd pic, and both pics are clicable to get larger sizes.I THINK it might be a drain hole, but unsure and if so how do I tell if I need to buy a bung to put in there, or is it inside the machine?
I blew in the hole and there is no blockage/pressure which I would expect if it was a drain hole with its “bung” missing? Please ignore the cr@p on the carpet its in the room the cats use!

unsure of that number myself, but if its like the standard built in whirlpool dw that would be the motor supprt going throught that hole. f4 fault number is no draining if due to some time of not being used, i would say if it might have a black pressure sw in sump like a black disc that could be blocked with muck, they have very weak springs on them or maybe alots of crap in the spigit to sink or maybe drain pipe that has gone dry and blocked up. the odds of the drain pump going faulty at same time are unlikely.
stick dw on programme see if it fills then canc programme and see if water goes away and open door that will let u know if its pump or pressure swJanuary 13, 2009 at 11:36 pm #273866smartin

Many thanks
That was perfect, exactly what I needed in fact.I followed your instructions here
Four flashes means that no drain has been detected in the time allowed. As you state that the machine is emptying, it is reasonable to assume that the Water Indicator is either full of congealed goo and is being held in the “full” position, or that the microswitch on the back of the unit has failed.
Locate the black grid in the sump at the 3 o’clock position and attack it vigorously with a toothbrush and plenty of hot water. It may scrub clean enough to allow it to reset. If not, you’ll have to remove it for proper cleaning or replacement. It’s a twist fit from under the machine.
I removed the pressure switch and gave it a good cleaning, the inside of it was full of what can only be described as a gooey substance
Tested the microswitch with a multimeter and its switching fine, so Hopefully it will work when I try it tomorrow, after giving the inside of the unit a real good clean.just for reasurance even though I’m pretty new to this and not yet sure of all the correct terminology as to the parts, I am a fully qualified tv and electronics engineer as well as computers and radio’s and know the precautions regarding power and making sure its removed and checking to make sure there are no live parts even with the power disconnected.

ParticipantADP4501/5 HOW do you know when its finished a cycle?
oh pooh! (trying hard not to swear)
After spending ages dismantling and totally cleaning the water indicator
I thought I was on to a winner
However I tried putting it on a rinse to test today
After ages all that happened was the sump filled with water, it heated fine, but then it wont pump out!Edit found another fault, the drain pump was blocked – see other post asking if anyone knows what this is.
Put the machine on a quick waash and it seemed to be doing it ok, it puimped water in, it got hot, pumped water out again but then the display light started flashing slowly continually
I dont know what that means
I’m assuming it might have been on a dry cycle or maybe finished? The instruction book is totally hopeless, it dont tell you anything about the programs or how you even know when its on a dry cycle or even when its finished
Is it just me being thick or is there some easy way to know when the machine is finished washing and drying?
or indeed any way other than opening the door and hoping?
At the moment it’s just a continual slow steady flashI’ve no idea if its an error or if its actually doing something it’s meant to be doing.

Now pay attention, 007…..
The machine indicates faults by pulsing the start lamp in a pattern – ie: 1-2-3-4-pause-repeat. A steady flashing light is the exception; it indicates a failure of the temperature sensing circuit, otherwise, the count indicates a code. 4 flashes = F4.
In view of what you have done so far, the connector into the NTC device (see piccie) may have got wet, thus throwing the computer. It’s worth noting that these fail for fun…… Try getting everything dried out first, otherwise you may need one of THESE.

working now 🙂
It simply needed resetting I think!
I took the temp probe out and dried it and all around it again just to play safe, and used a hairdryer on the drain motor and all round that area! then held the start button in for 10 seconds and changed program to reset.
Done 3 test loads now and no problem. Thanks for all the help.
