My dryer (probably about 8 years old now) won’t stay on for more than a few minutes before it cuts out and then it won’t start again for a while.

I found this old thread here:

    Hotpoint TDC30

which seems to be describing exactly the same problem. So I need to replace the relay. Can anyone provide any tips on how I should go about this? Sounds as though I just take the cover off and there it is. Is it really that simple?

    Many thanks.

It does sound like a relay fault.

Not that difficult, remove the mains plug, take off the lid. Relay is a clear perspex box located top centre.

Some very sharp edges so be careful. It helps to snip the plastic cable tie close to the relay to allow a little more room. It is a fiddly job and the contacts are close together so make a note of the positions first.

Thanks Jim. I’ll order up the part and give it a go.

    Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you

So I ordered the part from this site (£20.50) and it took two days to arrive.

I followed the instructions from Jim (plus the tip from the earlier thread about lying it face down to avoid loosing screws and also only taking one out completely) and it took about 15 minutes to swap it over.

A bit tricky extracting the relay out into the open but once out swapped the cables like for like with the new one, put it back together and it works! My first ever appliance repair and no cuts or other injuries.

    My wife is seriously impressed!

Thanks to everyone who helped out.
