Participanthi all.
this is my first post on here, though i have used the spare parts facility before and was very impressed. i have a hotpoint tumble drier part no. ctd00g and today it tripped the consumer unit. it has a sealed plug fitted and i have tested for continuity between the pins but these are not shorting out. i turned the drier off and switched the power back on. but as soon as the drier was turned back on, it tripped again.
does anybody have any idea what may be causing this?
we purchased it on the 24/11/04.
thanks all.

Participanttheres a very good chance that theres water in the heater chamber
take of the rear banjo shaped panel.. does water come out? if it does, and its wet in there, dry it all out with a hairdryer and try it again
oh, and testing for continuity between pins IS NOT the way to test for earth leaks

thanks for the reply mate. i have tried removing the banjo jobbie and all appears dry inside there, so the search continues.
what exactly causes the tripping? could it be a fuse? i haven’t tried that yet? could it be a short somewhere and how could i test it?
thanks again.

As helo_75 says, dampness on the elements is by far the most common cause of this. Often caused by failure to keep the condensor clean even though it is an absolute pain to clean out on these machines.
It may have dried out before you took the back off.
It is not uncommon for the drum to slice through the back of the cabinet and cut through the heater wiring harness.
The only way forward is to test all electrical components for earth leakage or short circuit with a meggar or multimeter.

where the wires from heater pass through the back, remove that side panel, UNPLUG first, there you will see the heater plug, disconnect & see if it still trips, prob wont, and, as helo has said, the fault is prob a damp heater, (sometimes you can see it wet, other times it may just be a small amount of moisture)

well folks. just a quick update. i was going to have a look at the offending appliance again last night and thought i’d try it beforehand, lo and behold it worked. does this indicate a damp element?
thanks again.

Almost certainly.
Keep the condensor as clean as you can. Remove the condensor, lie down on the floor and put your hand as far back as you can in the condensor chamber and pull out any fluff or gunge you can feel in the channel at the back.
From the back of the machine you can poke a large plastic bag tie through the drain hole between the pump float chamber and the condensor chamber to clear any blockage if you carefully lift out the pump assembly first.
