ParticipantHia. Back again with more Hotpoint woes :rolls:
We recently (4 months ago) paid the £100 to have our machine serviced as the bearings had collapsed.
The engineer was good tbh, and he replaced the rear half drum, the heating element, a few other bits and the control panel as it failed when he did the initial test after rebuild.
The machine is working fine, but is knocking and vibrating in time with the fast spin cycles.
A quick search suggests the concrete may be loose or the filter system blocked.
I am going to have a look at both of them now, but wondered if anybody has any other suggestions as to the cause.
Under normal wash routineds (ie not spinning), the machine is very quiet.

Probably a suspension peg dropped out.Tip the machine back and where the suspension dampers fit to the drum, they should be secured with two plastic pegs.
Push them back in if they are adrift and bend the little locking tab out with a small screwdriver.
Power off of course..
PS watch the edges of the base as they are very sharp.February 6, 2009 at 7:30 pm #276428twonks

Thanks for the info. I’ll have a check after the test wash going at the mo.
I think the problem was caused by the below, which must have occured as a result of a paddle being loose at one side and lifting in the wash – thus allowing small items through into the filter.

In a household of 4 it is hard to get people to understand the theory of emptying pockets before washing… grrr

It will be the other way round, all that rubbish will have damaged the paddle.
Any one of those coins could quite easily punch a hole right through the outer drum. you would not be covered in any way for such damage.

Hi Jim.
When you say outer drum, do you mean the plastic casing, or the metal drum in which the clothes spin?
Fortunately neither seem damaged and I have ordered a paddle from the shop to replace the damaged one.
I’m not really bothered about being covered for anything with regards to the washer, as it will be binned when we have funds for another.
(but not before we replace the Hotpoint dryer, which is also a bag of the brown stuff)

coins can damage both drums, usually the inner (metal) drum will only suffer a few dents, however the outer (plastic) drum can be holed by a coin, imagine the speed of the spin, then a coin being launched at that speed through the plastic drum, it will smash through
you need to check that all the other paddles are secure also, as jim has said, it was the coins that broke the paddle and may have weakened the others too
p.s. its not the machines job to keep coins out, its yours! 😆

Its also worth noting that unless you invest in an upmarket machine your new machine will have a completely sealed outer drum. One coin in the wrong place and you are looking at a major repair, even if the machine is only weeks old.
You could of course show the rest of your family the door. 😉
The fact is that the instruction book does advise the user to check all pockets, therefore the fault ultimately lies with the person loading the machine, not whoever left the items in the pockets.
I always tell my customers, “check all pockets, anything you find, you keep” 😀

and on jim’s last post, i went out just a few weeks ago to a machine only 6 weeks old, sealed drum, coin had gone through the outer (plastic) drum, the machine was on the 1st floor, when the coin holed the drum all of the water came out, down through the floor & wrecked the ceiling below,
result???
garantee void, due to coin damage, cost to fit a new sealed drum £230 (machine cost £200 new!) plus a wrecked ceiling below,
beware, coins & cheap machines = mess & £££

This:

was once a £2 coin. It destroyed a plastic-tanked Servis automatic. We never did find the middle bit.
Anyway, makes a nice keyring.

eek, thanks for the replies.
Pockets will be checked from now, and the kids are not going to use the washing machine any longer 😉
Back to the original problem, and the thumping on final spins is still there.
The drum appears to move very easily when empty – almost too easily.
This machine has two bottom dampers and two top springs.
Is it likely that the dampers could have worn out as such?
There is no trace of fluid on them, so if they are oil filled I don’t think they have leaked.

If you unplug and tilt the machine back against a wall or cupboard and shine a torch underneath you can see the two suspension units.
I always fit new pegs in the top of the dampers, its quite common for them to come adrift if you refit the old ones.
kiddo 66 did allude to this in his post. 😉

Yep I looked at the struts mountings as per the post, and they are all present and correct.
Didn’t check there function at the time though…. doh.
We are just about to go out and look at white goods 🙂

I can count the number of suspension units I have fitted to these machines on the fingers of one finger. 😉
Not a common weak point TBH.
