ParticipantI moved into my first home 3 years ago. We inherited a scrappy Indesit which is on its last legs. I have been looking for a new washing machine since we moved in but now we are expecting a baby in April so I want to get one some time this week.
At first I wanted a Miele because fropm everything I’ve read they are the Rolls Royce of washing machines but my uncle (who repairs washing machines) advised me to avoid because they can charge what they like for call outs once warranty has expired.,Then I stumbled accross a brand called ISE. They also come with 5 & 10 year warranty (parts + labour) covered by AXA. More info here:
http://www.iseappliances.co.uk/
The ISE10 is £782.97 which is out of my bracket (like I said I have a baby on the way). For this reason I have opted for the ISE5 at £440.42. I was just about to ring up my local dealer to order one today but then I noticed the ISE10 is much faster washing than the ISE5. For example:
White / Colour wash, 40 degrees: ISE5 = 125mins, ISE10 = 65mins
Synthetic wash, 40 degrees: ISE5 = 105 mins, ISE10 = 65mins
All other programmes are about 15mins faster on the ISE10.Since we are starting a family the washing machine will be used more and more so wash speed is quite important so it fits in with our lifestyle; We don’t have room for a tumble dryer so the earlier the wash is done the earlier we can hang the clothes on clothes maid to dry!
The ISE10 is £340 extra. This is a lot of money for me and my partner believes £440 is expensive for a washing machine so if she found out I bought one for £780 she would kill me. Baby is due in April 09 and our wedding is July 2010 so that is her priority. But I dont want to buy a machine that isn’t built to last thus is a waste of money.
Can anyone offer any advice such as…
– Is a standard 40 degrees wash usually ABOUT 125mins on modern AAA washing machines or is this a long wash by the ISE5? My current very old Indesit does this in about 60 mins!!
– Does anyone have an ISE washing machine that can give me any feedback?
– Has anyone managed to negotiate a cheaper ISE machine?
– Are there any other machine out there comparable in price, performance and warranty cover? Thanks loads in advance.
Dane
For your info:
ISE10 = http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1769
ISE5 = http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=118&products_id=469You can not buy these washing machines from shops you get from your dealer for fixed price. I would have prefered to buy from internet so I could find Vouchers or go through Quidco but this isn’t possible as nothing such exists.

Hi,
I can answer some of the questions for you.
The ISE5 is currently not available other than stocks left with dealers. At present there is no replacement date for the 5.
The ISE10 is fast compared with most and close on or over 2 hours is normal for a cotton 40ËšC wash on most washers these days that are A or A+ rated. The old Indesit is probably using loads of power and loads of water and that increases the speed.
I am biased on the ISE so I will let others offer their opinion but I do have and use a 10, it’s superb. 😉
You can get the machine from some stores, many of the dealers do have stores. 😉
What you generally won’t see ISE in is the sheds for three main reasons, first being that they can’t make enough money on them, the margins are much higher on the likes of Miele but then an equivalent Miele with a 10 year warranty is £150-200 more expensive. The second reason is that many retailers don’t want to sell you a product and not have you coming back in a few years for another. Third one is that they can’t also flog you an extended warranty or maintenance plan which they make a lot of money on.
Many traditional retailers don’t like the ISE model of all inclusive at a sensible price. 😉

Thanks for your response.
I nipped into Comet lastnight and I found out most AAA machines take about 2 hours for 40 degrees wash, because they warm up the water from the machine itself and not the boiler. Anyways, my partner went histerical when I mentioned a £780 machine so we have opted for the ISE5 for £440. I was going to order today (our dealer has 1 in stock) but now I am not sure…
I have heard ISE are made by Asko in Sweden who are in turn owned by Antonio Merloni (Ardo) in Italy (who also own Servis) and they have gone into administration and are waiting on a 60 Million Euro bail out from the EU, from what I can see Asko will be offloaded to who we dont know.
This has lead me to decide whether to hold off buying an ISE at the moment.
For this reason I don’t know whether to go with a Miele (Prestige 6 @ £517 or 1613 at £507). Also money-wise with the Baby and Wedding coming up I may consider £400 for a Bosch.
I never realised buying a Washing Machine would be such a difficult decision!!!!

Hi Dane,
Asko is run totally separately and is unaffected by events in Italy. 😉
The ISE5 is a totally different animal to the 10 and the one thing I don’t want you thinking is that you’re getting a cut price ISE10 as that’s simply not the case. The 10 is unique in many, many ways.
Bosch I’ve never been a fan of, I know a lot of the guys like them but they’re like AEG now, German in name and that’s about it. For £400 you’re not going to get a German made machine.
The Miele is a reasonable buy and a pretty decent machine but you have the thorny issue of service costs once it exits the warranty period which, on those models should be two years at best. To take it to five years, add another £130-180 roughly, ten years isn’t possible unless you then go onto a rolling contract at approximately £80-120 per year.
Factor that lot in and, to be honest, the ISE10 is cheap by comparison. Sure, it’s more expensive up front, that’s a given, but it is cheaper even if for some strange reason it dies on its tenth birthday.
The most the 10 can cost you is about £80 per year in hard cash terms and that’s fixed for the next decade and, IMO, that’s a good deal.
Unless of course you just want to take your chances?

I need a washing machine now but fact is I do not have £780, I have debt, I have only been in my house for 3 years so I am still setting up, we are expecting our first baby in April (which is where my debt has derived from buying furniture etc) and we are saving for a wedding in July next year. £440 is more realistic given our circumstances.

I would love an ISE10 but I can’t afford it. I know the ISE10 is superior to the ISE5. Similar to cars you would expect a car that costs twice as much from the same make should be better built and drive better etc. I understand the ISE5 is plastic instead of metal, takes twice as long to wash and comes with half the warranty cover, but it is still an ISE product so I would expect it to be reliable and perform well and is AAA rated. It sounds like you have little faith in the ISE5 would you advise against it?

Hi Dane,
No, it’s just that people have had it in their heads that the ISE5 is some sort of cut price ISE10 which it isn’t, it’s totally different. My own personal opinion is that the ISE10 is on a different planet in terms of build, ease of use and performance when you compare it against the ISE5 but, as you rightly point out, to achieve that costs a fair bit more.
The ISE5 meanwhile is going to see a change in about a month or so and, I’d suggest, that if you can wait, wait. 😉

Our washing machine is on its last legs but I it will hang on for about 4 more weeks. Our baby is due 7th April so I need to wash all the clothes etc ready for their arrival. Can you let me know what changes to expect or are you able to tell me exactly when the new version will be released??? Is it going to be better than the current version? Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks!

Also, will stock of the old models (the current ISE5) be sold at a cheaper rate and is the new version in a similar price bracket ie £400-450?
Thanks again

The replacement is due start of March, exact date TBC. There are some changes but I’m not at liberty to publish them at the moment.
There is no reduction in the current model’s pricing, sorry.

Is there an ISE dealer in your area I wonder?

I understand. Thanks for letting me know anyway. When you get a date for release please could you let me know straight away because my other half is pushing for a new washing machine asap???
I do have an ISE dealer in my area (Barrow-in-Furness) called NW Vacs.
I am slightly worried now about purchasing an ISE5 machine. I have to buy from price bracket £400-500 and not £500-800. I know there will be a difference in quality but I hope the ISE5 is in the top end of my price range…

My partner is now 34 weeks pregnant and I still need a new washing machine thus I haven’t been able to wash all the babies gear yet which I need to do before its imminent arrival. I am desperate for a new machine but am stuck in limbo… do I:
1. Buy an ISE 5 2008 version?
I understand this machine is now discontinued but my local dealer still has 1 in stock. He is charging £449 for it.
I like this machine – I have no room for a tumble dryer so I need a good spin spead – This AAA performance machine fits the bill (1600 spin speed).
I want a reliable machine able to offer peace of mind which is in my price bracket £450 max – this comes with 5 years warranty.
2. Wait to buy the ISE 5 2009 version?
I spoke to ISE earlier and they told me they expect this to be released some time mid March, although date isn’t confirmed yet.
They told me what to expect in respect of changes to above:i) Now only comes with a 2 year warranty. This was blames on the economic down turn. He said rather than force the customers with 5 year warranty the would now only charge £399 (£50 less than previous version) with the option to pay the extra for the added cover / peace of mind. I thought ISE prided themselves on creating machines which were built to last so I would have preferred them to put there money where there mouth is and throw in the 5 year warranty as standard.
ii) Improved suspension – was there problems with the older one?
iii) Energy Improved to A+ but Spin reduced to B. Was AAA. Now A+AB.
iv) LCD screen – My local dealer told me the 2008 version has an LCD screen.
v) Triple rinse function
vi) 95 degree wash – which is close to sterilising clothes
vii) Washing times reduced – can you tell me if they are significantly reduced? Similar to speed of ISE10?
I spoke to my local dealer today and he wasn’t aware of the new model. He told me ISE have got from another supplier because of the Euro plummeting. He believed it is being pitched somewhere between the ISE2 and ISE5. Both machines seem to have their benefits but I don’t know whether to buy the 2008 version whilst I can!?
3. Buy another machine completely?
No doubt about it I would love a Miele W3922 or ISE10 but I cant afford one. The ISE 5 is confusing me and is right at the end of my current budget. My employer runs a scheme with a website called privelage club. I can get a Hotpoint AQXGF149 for £295 delivered. It is £435 in most shops, although I have found it for £385 at Dixons and £322 from Hughes Direct in association with Which but I dont know whether this machine is reliable – a lot of my friends and family have new Hotpoint machines and recommend them highly but things I have read on the web say otherwise. Do I believe advise from people who have them or hearsay from stangers/experts? Ideally I would like a Dyson CR02 washing machine but I cant find one on the net. Thanks for all your help in this matter. Your responses will be taken on board and hopefully will help me resolve this asap which mother and baby will be really grateful for.

Given its taken you this long to decide on a washer,I,m suprised your wife ever got pregnant.! 😉
The Aqualtis machine is pretty reliable and you are getting a good price, but bear in mind there is no warranty on it other than 12 months and 4 years extra on parts only.
I doubt it will match the ISE on build quality but then that is reflected in the price.March 12, 2009 at 2:35 pm #277085holwena

I was looking for a new washing machine that I hoped would last. My previous one was a Zanussi s118T which I had been using daily for 29years and it had always been a very reliable machine but lately my washing was coming out wet or it would not turn itself off and spin forever so I decided the time had come for a new machine. I did lots of research and decided I would like either an ise5 or miele prestige. I decided on the Ise because I had heard that repair charges on Mieles out of warranty could be expensive and the ise had some features that I wanted.
I rang to order one last week but was told there was no stock until the new one came out next month, this week I had a phone call to tell me that some had arrived. I didnt know whether to wait for the new one or not. I decided that the ise5 was the one that had appealed to me in the first place so I had it delivered yesterday.
I ran the initial empty wash and could not believe how quiet it was. I then did a mixed wash on the 40degree cotton cycle, it took a long time and it was very quiet until the final spin cycle , it then started to vibrate alot and was noisy. Ive just done a 60degree cotton wash today, it took about 2and a half hours this was just towels, they came out alot drier than my old machine the spin was not as bad but still noisy for the last 5 mins.
This machine has lots of useful features althoughI do not know if will really ever use them. 2 other points are …if you open the drain outlet alot of water comes out because there is no hose and the dispenser is very awkward to take . The machine does seem a very nice machine if I can get the vibrations sorted out, I would like to think that it would give me as good service as my old Zanussi but I do not think it will.March 12, 2009 at 2:54 pm #277086Danegerous

Thanks for your response. I was really interested to hear how the new machine performed. In the end and after all my time and research (said I know) I ended up getting a Siemens last minute. Hopefully when this one conks out I will have more cash to buy an ISE10 or a Miele W3922. But for the time being I am very happy with our Siemens.
I couldn’t really afford an expensive machine but I realise you do get what you pay for. I found out Samsung and Siemens are both offering 5 year warranty on their machines so I looked at the cheaper ones. You could get a Samsung 1200 spin for £299 – not bad with a 5 year warranty. I ended up buying a Siemens WM14S383 for £389 from Jual Domestics, plus £29 delivery = £418. The same machine is £650 in Currys and similar on John Lewis. I have registered it for 5 year warranty promotion which ends at the end of March. I have never heard of Jual but they were brilliant I ordered it Saturday at 4pm and it come on Monday.
We used the machine first to do an empty 60 degree Eco wash which took well over 2 hours. My partner has used it a few times since and is really impressed with the results. Overall I am very satisfied with my decision. ISE impress me but I am a bit hesitant that you cant buy it from shops and are not that many reviews out they yet about reliability cos they are relatively now. I will see how ISE get on and consider buying one for my next machine.
Good look with your ISE5-2 and thanks all for your responses.
