ParticipantA couple of weeks ago the insulation broke down on the heater of my ageing Bendix Autowasher 1000 Deluxe (PNC 914490443) so I bought one of these heaters http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/Washing+Machine+Parts/Tricity+Bendix/Heaters+and+Elements/ZN34103+-+Zanussi+{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}252526+Other+Washing+Machine+{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}252526+Washer+Dryer+Element.html
It was fine for two weeks, but now the RCD is tripping again, and when I disconnect the heater element, all is ok. The resistance of the element to earth is about 500K ohms, which is far less than the 2M ohms suggested as a minimum by my Haynes manual, so what’s going on here? Did I buy the wrong part or has it gone faulty? Could something else in the machine be causing the fault?
Thanks.

Yes. The water level control system will almost certainly be choked, causing the machine to underfill. Power off, lean the machine back to a good angle and look for the hose connecting the drum to the pump. Coming off the side of it is a plastic airbell. Remove it and clean it out, clear the spigot on the hose which it it fits into.
The heater is an immersion type, if it runs dry, it will break down to earth very quickly.

That sounds like it could well be the problem. I’ve now disconnected the heater and the machine is filling above the element but maybe there was a load which didn’t. I’ll certainly check it out and let you know what I find.

So I found a clear plastic tube about the diameter of a 2p piece leading from the hose to the pump which I guess is the expansion vessel. It contained a reasonable amount of crud lining the sides but not blocked and I gave it a good clean out.
UK Whitegoods have now told me the heater for this machine is obselete, so I guess that means the part I ordered from them was incorrect. My mistake, not theirs. I’m not sure what difference this would make as it appeared to fit quite happily, but I suppose a slightly different shape might mean it’s now touching the side of the tub.
Anyway, the part is available elsewhere and I’ll see how I get on with that.Cheers
