    Hi All,

I have a whirlpool built in microwave (whirlpool amw480/ix). Bought from Ikea.
Recently it has started throwing electric sparks inside the vent externally.

Not sure if it is an airvent but its external and just above the door. You can see inside. There are various wires in there, but cant see any damaged ones.

Basically when you press the start button, once every few days an electric spark will flash followed by burning smell!

Then it will work fine and not spark anymore.

A whirlpool guy said it could be a build up of grease from cooking. Problem is this area isnt accessible to clean. (if thats what it is)

    Any ideas anyone?

    Hi

You need a Microwave engineer to look at it , do not attempt to carry out any repairs your self . Inside of microwave ovens have very high voltages even when switched off.
If sparking do not use until it has been looked at.

just to add to the warning!

EVEN WHEN SWITCHED OFF AND UNPLUGGED, A MICROWAVE CAN KILL AND HAS, KILLED PEOPLE.

Normally , a bleed resistor makes it safe, BUT if the resistor has failed, a lethal charge remains. even professional engineers have been caught out.

I agree that accumulated greasy dust is the most likely cause of the “spark display”…it will get worse and could brender the machine unsafe or “kill” it completely.
