ParticipantLast weekend my Hotpoint CTD00 Tumble Dryer caused the RCD to trip out
I have plugged it into a non RCD circuit and then I pushed the Start button all I get is a buzzing noise – no drum rotation and no heat.
This leads me to suspect that it’s either the timer or the condenser.
Is anyone able to advise iof I am correct, or advise on any diagnosis that I can do, so that I buy the correct part. Any recomendations for reliable suppliers would be welcomed

Don’t think you are correct with your diagnosis.
It could be the door switch.
Unless you have the knowlage and a multimeter, it would be best to get your local engineer in to check this for you.

You are not kidding with the ‘old’ bit of your username are you. 😉
This machine does have a condensor, its the large metal vaned assembly that sits in a chamber down at the bottom that you pull out to clean.
The term ‘condenser’ has not really been used in the industry for years to describe an electrical component, capacitor is the accepted name. 🙂
The capacitor can fail and blow the trip but it is not that common however it would cause the motor to hum.
Timer failures rarely cause the RCD to go off either. As A1TEC mentions, it could also be a doorlock but this would only affect later models that have a different type of lock fitted. We would need your serial number to identify.
Moisture on the elements is the most common cause of earth leakage.
If the capacitor has failed then it could lead to failure of the safety stat due to loss of motor action which would account for the loss of heat.
Plug out at all times if you intend to investigate further ( although I suspect you may have some idea given your reference to a condenser) 😉

try checking the pin that pokes through to the door switch is still in the door also 😉

Pump blockage will cause the base to over fill, it overflows into the fan chamber – fan throws water into the heater, bang.

Thanks for all the above suggestions.
Sorry I used the term consender instead of capacitor 😳
I have looked at the above advice and even with the door open and the timer set to zero, when you push Start you get the buzzing noise. The pin on the door is in tact – have replaced one of these on a previous machine
The serial number of my machine is 95313490000 609130081
PS the above testing was done with the lid etc on, as I do I take electricity seriously.
I think it may be time to start removing some key components and testing them with my trusty multimeter
Thanks for the sound advice so far.February 22, 2009 at 3:04 pm #277910iadom

Your machine does have the Bitron door interlock as opposed to the earlier basic micro switch. It can give the exact symptoms you describe.
Part number if required is C00195695. An e-mail to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk should get you sorted.
No easy way of testing it other than to change it.

John,
What can I say, other than a big thank you. The part arrived on Thursday, and I picked it up this morning. Fitted it in 10 minutes and the tumble dryer works a treat. We are all happy now and are about a £100 better off than if we had called Hotpoint out for the 5 year free parts guarantee.
Once again a big thank you and the same to this website. The price of the part was the best I couyld find anywhere.
A happy customer !!!!

Happy to help. 😀
As are all the engineers that put forward suggestions on this forum.
