problems with the programmer knob on Siemans Siwimat plus 34

Sorry folks I know it’s an old machine but it was still going strong till the programmer knob popped off (Siemans Siwimat plus 3403). I’ve managed to push it back on after a long fight but it would appear that it’s not in the right place as the programmes (ie: P, J, L etc) don’t match up with what the machines doing – when I turn it to the short spin it starts to fill up or rinse etc. I have looked for markings to line up but I can’t see any at all. There is a black sleeve with a “universal joint” type plastic ring. The black sleeve pushes over the centre piece and the facia knob then pushes into both the ring and the facia. Hope that makes any sense as it’s difficult to explain.

Does anyone have any idea how I line up the knob and it’s insides (the ring and sleeve and loose programme guide) so that the machine does what I want it to do when I turn it to a particular programme? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
