    Hi,

I have a (just over) 1 year old Hotpoint VTD00P dryer which has started tripping the mains RCD.

    S/N is 709220313

Will run for a few seconds up to 20 mins before the trip. Everthing seems to be working fine up to that point (drum turns, heater works). I suspect it may be happening when the drum reverses direction.

I’ve taken it apart (unplugged, needless to say!) – no obvious fraying/wear on internal cables, no damp fluff build up. Continuity testing doesn’t show any obvious routes to ground on internal connections.

Heater element? Drive Motor? There’s not a lot of electronics/wiring in
    there….

Might be less prone on low heat.

    Any help welcome!

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Heater down to earth is common on condensor dryers, not a real problem on vented models though.

The drum was prone to slicing through the back panel at the exact same point where the heater wiring is routed through the back.

Later models have a different drum that does not cause this.

    Hi Jim,

I’ll check the back of the drum later for cable fraying. I recall seeing the cables coming through close to the drum mount, so its possible.

The door sensor was also a possibility, but I understand that this was a problem on earlier models & this one has a re-designed door catch/switch.

Needless to say, I’m reluctant to replace after only 14-15 months. It does get a lot of use, so I’ll need to get something sorted soon.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

If you pop the lid off, have a look at the back edge of the drum. If it is completely square then it is the old type, if it is slightly rounded it should be OK.

it was feb 2006 when they modified the drum, so im sure at 15-16 months it will have the new type fitted
