I suspect this one is terminal…

Indesit built in freezer, can’t see a model number on it anywhere, vintage 1995.

Being a nice chap I’ve just defrosted and cleaned the freezer in the house I’m moving out of next week. In doing this I left it unplugged for about 48 hours.

When I plugged it back in, it made the kind of electrical fizzing noise only the most optimistic amongst us believe can be a good thing. It lasted for a few seconds before clicking itself off, then produced the nice accompanying burning smell. After a few minutes, it repeated this cycle, and sat there continuing to do so. The compressor did not run at any time.

After a bit of dismantling (yes, unplugged), I found a small black electrical unit plugged into the side of the compressor which was pretty sooty and burnt up. I fancy it to be a thermal cut out.

My guess is the pump has seized and this one’s off to the tip? Any point trying to rescue it?

I’d agree, the relay/klixon is frazzled and that’s the problem.

On a good day with a fair wind and a lot of luck it’d just be the relay but I expect, like you, that it’s the compressor that’s fried. And no, it’s not worth doing anything with it if that’s the case.

Likely that leaving it unplugged for 48 hours has allowed some ice/frost somewhere to thaw out and leak water onto the compressor this would cause a short circuit and create your problem, pretty common occurence. Bad as it looks at the time it is mostly salvagable. If it didn’t blow the fuse or earth leakage trip it may have a better than average chance.
Compressor model and type might help as relays etc could still be available.

Thanks – this particular issue resolved by having the freezer removed from the list of items included in the sale! It’s now down the tip, sorry recycling centre.
