Hi I have an 2 year old Slimline Integrated Smeg DI409CA Dishwasher which is not working properly & showing an E6 fault code.

I drained the drain pipe manually, actually I swallowed most of the water in the attempt! & re-set the programme but when I choose a new setting the same thing happens, it makes a few mechanical noises like its going to work then after a few minuites it beeps & when you open it its got standing water at the bottom of it & fault E6 is showing.

We have already had a local repair man out to look at it who didnt seem to know what was a matter with the machine & eventually told us their was no signal to the pump & the PCB must be faulty & would need replacing, costs quoted for this was £60.00 to remove the dishwasher unit out & £140.00 to replace the PCB.

The Smeg site seems to state that if this fault is showing its down to a blocked or obstructed drain pipe, defective drain pump or defective pressure switch.

Can you please tell me if its possible the repair man was right & it could be the pcb? if so if his costs were reasonable?

The fault code specifically means that no drop in water level is detected in the time allowed. I assume that your repairer by “signal” meant that the pump was not receiving 240v and therefore would not run. This being the case, the fault is certainly in the pcb – there are only two components involved – the drain pump motor and the pcb telling it what to do.

Prices are about correct (don’t know where you are in the country – London can be a lot dearer). To replace the pcb, he shouldn’t need to drag the machine out as it’s in the top of the door. Were you my customer, I’d be replacing the drain pump motor as well, as “good practice”.

Bear in mind that your repairer has probably already spent an hour working the problem out, his charge is pretty reasonable.

SMEGs are a bit like Ferraris – stylish with good performance mechanicals. The electrics can be a bit of a cow.

    Thanks Penguine45.

The Smeg came with a fitted kitchen & first one we have had so I had no idea about their bad points etc.

In your opinion do you think its’s worth (cost effective) repairing or would you go for a new dishwasher? – If the latter, any suggestions on make/model for a integrated slimline one?

    Thanks Again

Can’t give you a straight answer to that one. If you assume that the replacement cost for a decent machine is going to be £350-£450, it’s worth considering the repair, otherwise move on. Bosch/Seimens/NEFF do a decent slimline, there is the current SMEG and maybe Lux group. Not much else I’d even consider – certainly if it’s “cheap” – be wary. There is a curse of Chinese dishwashers plaguing the place at the moment and quite frankly, I wouldn’t have one given.

Don is the retail guru – he might be able to give you some model numbers to consider.

Thanks again Penguin45, I was considering a Beko DW450 model that I had seen but from what you say that would be a bad idea?

Maybe if Don is checking the forum he could give me some help on those model numbers etc?

Do you think it would be better/cheaper to just have a free standing dishwasher to replace the integrated one?

    Thanks again for your help.
