ParticipantMy washing machine model Whirlpool AWM5 125/5 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time stops mid wash cycle. After a long wait to ensure it has stopped I have tried moving the control slightly to coax it to continue with the wash but it makes motor/pump type noises but nothing else. I have tried moving it on to the rinse and spin but again same noises but no action. Hubby after reading on here took the pump out but there was nothing untoward there, cleaned it up and put it back. I ran hot water through the hose, black slimey stuff came out but other than that nothing stopped the flow. After cleaning throughly put it back. Machine worked for 1st 6 washes with no problem then exactly same thing happened again. Pump checked again all ok put back worked all okay again first few washes then back to intermittent problem. It seems that only 1 in 5 washes completes to the end of cycle.
Any help/ideas would be appreciated.April 8, 2009 at 10:23 pm #282672aqualectric

Worn motor brushes can cause these machines to stop.
Power off before any inspection. :plug:

Thanks for your quick answer 🙂 . Looks like hubby and I will be getting the machine out again when he gets in from work. Is it easy for keen novices like us to be able to remove the part, tell if the part is worn and fit the new carbon brushes?

Have taken the motor brushes out and they do not look very worn at all, still long and shiney. I can add that when the machine stops mid cycle the red on light stays on so there is still power to the machine. Any further ideas at all as to what could be causing the problem would be appreciated.

😀 Thought I would give you an update on my washing machine. After taking the front of the washing machine off and removing a plastic milkey clear colour part (sorry don’t know what part it was despite searching on here) we found the tiniest little polystyrene ball in it. It appears as though the polystyrene ball ocassionally raised and blocked in the narrow part making the machine stop midway. When the machine stopped and we removed the pump etc., the machine would work for a couple of washes which was likely because by tipping the machine on its side it had dislodged the polystyrene ball temporarily.
I have waited and done numerous washes before replying so as to be sure that this is the only problem there was.
A big thankyou to you all for replying though as I would not have had the courage to try and find the fault myself without having the forum for help

It sounds like what you removed & cleaned the obstruction from was the pressure vessel. Well done nicely found & repaired, it’s often the little things like this can cause the biggest headaches. :salute:

I love the potential for a double entendre rich monty pythin style sketch to come from this dialogue 🙂
