ParticipantMy first posting so please accept my apologies now if i do anything wrong…..
I have a Hotpoint TDC60 condensing tumble dryer that is not drying the clothes, a little bit of heat but not much.
I am a service engineer by trade so electrical fault finding and using multimeters etc is no problem to me.
I have removed the back covering the heater and thermostats. The first coil of the heating element is glowing red but non of the others.
Four elements in total wired in series. brown wire to the first element, an orange wire between all four elements (centre tap?) and a blue wire coming from the last element.
I have tested the green dot thermostat for continuity- ok
the other thermostat also tested and is ok.
Tested the resistance of each element individually at 20 ohms each.i Have removed the water condensing tray at the front and pushed on the connector to water tank, i can hear the microswitch clicking ‘which i know is not a definite test that its actually working’ but it looks a pain to get to and test.
I have run the dryer with the water tank in, and with the water tank out. no difference between the two, which seems a bit odd to me .
Can anyone shed any light on this problem, is there a float somewhere that may be sticking. another thermal trip somewhere.
Hard work when you dont have a wiring diagram or parts manual for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, many many thanks, andy g

There is another stat inside the door, its at the top of the inner surround.
You might need to take the lid off and snip the small cable ties to allow you to pull it down far enough to test. This one does fail now and again but not that often. I have seen it fail intermittantly though. If it looks a bit burnt on the terminals it could be the cause of the problem.
Most of the other causes of poor drying such as blockages and loose fans usually make the TOC ( green spot) one shot fail.
If you try it with the back off you will normally only see the first element glowing, not advisable to do this for very long. 😉

thanks for the info on the other stat near the door.
are there any more things to check if its not this stat. as i want to fix it next time i look at it.any water floats that could be stuck?
I noticed a brush type connector on the middle of the drum with a stainless steel band going all the way round. I took this to be an earth point for static build up but have found out its part of a moisture sensor in the drum itself. how does this work, could this be causing problems if it thinks that the clothes are dry?any help appreciated, i just want as much info as possible before i take it apart again.

The float switch would stop the heater totally if it was stuck.
The small brush is used to pass a tniy current through the damp clothes, as they dry their resistance increases, the module senses this to control the dryer unless you set it to a timed drying sequence. If the brush is not making good contact with the band, or if you try the machine without any damp clothes in it the the heater will soon be switched off.
