Well, I’ve spent the best part of 6 hours searching this forum and others (and which.co.uk) – and think I’ve picked up most viewpoints!

The search is for a reliable machine for a family of seven, and I value a quick wash over a large tub (i.e. do two loads quickly, rather than a large load staying dirty). The initial cost of the machine is not an issue, as I’m looking for 10+years service. I’m also pretty good at repairing machines (both mine and friends – ukwhitegoods have done well out of me!) The serviceability would seem to knock out the Miele range.

So far the ISE10 seems to win based on the wash speed (assuming that it isn’t just cutting out rinse cycles!) But here’s the rub – the wife thinks the vertical door is ridiculous and takes up too much space. She (and I) empty straight into a washing basket.

    So a couple of questions:
    1. How far does the vertical door protrude? Photos make it look like you wouldn’t put a basket in front and overstretch over the door to empty the drum. Which is what we’d do…
    2. Just what is involved in removing the vertical door? I found this thread: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=33294 which indicated it was more than just a clip in unit. Does it require additional parts? Does the inner door have a handle?

The utility room is quite narrow, so the vertical door taking up space may be the deciding factor.

And if the answer is no to the ISE10 – could any helpful soul recommend any model which has a fast-wash option that doesn’t just cut out rinse cycles and actually increases the amount of water used (I’m not eco-unfriendly, but happy to use a similar amount of water to my 15-year old Zanussi in order to get a similar wash time to my 15-year old Zanussi)

    Thanks, Gordon

    Hi Gordon,

The wash time with three rinses is approx 1 hour 15 minutes for a 40ËšC cotton was with the three rinse option, you can choose either three or five rinses by default on the 10. If you change the default to five rinses it will add 5-10 minutes roughly. This is, in my experience, about as good as it gets on time without using quick washes which are about as useful as a chocolate firegaurd IMO in the real world.

The door does several things, it reduces noise, keeps the front tidy and when opened gives you somewhere to put laundry you pull out the machine.

    The door protrudes approximately 490mm.

It can be removed but it’s a bit of a hassle to do so and I wouldn’t advise it. The reason being that you’d be left with unsightly holes where the hinges were or we’d have to order in a new front panel and fit it.

The inner door doesn’t have a handle as such. It does obviously have a bit of the trim that you use to pull the door open but it doesn’t need a handle, latch or catch type affair as you get traditionally as it has a solenoid door lock. So, when the program finishes it will pop open automatically or not depending on how you want it to work for child safety, it’s a simple option that you program.

Fast washes are all the same pretty much as you can’t cheat the physics involved. All you can wash in any of them is lightly soiled items and that is defined as, “worn once, not next to skin”. It doesn’t matter what the sales gubbins tells you, that’s the truth of it. They are all designed to refresh, not clean.

All fast washes use reduced water, wash time and rinsing as well as, more often than not, a lower spin speed, to achieve the “quick” time.

TBH the way that they are marketed makes it very, very confusing and in some cases just plain misleading.

But, due to EU regulations you won’t get what you had in the old Zanussi now as, if someone were to produce a machine that did that now, they’d probably get locked up and the key thrown away for being an environmental danger. So, irrespective of what machine you go for, like most people who get a new machine these days, your wash habits will have to change and that’s pretty much that in all honesty as there isn’t any other option but that now.

I think you could just bung your basket on the floor, partway overlapped by the door, scoop the laundry straight from drum, across door and it drops in the basket.

then you close the door , call the wife and tell her you’ve emptied the machine for her and left the basket easily acessible 😛

    that’s a win-win situation!
