I went to a 13 year old Bosch (SMS4472GB/20) dishwasher this morning, complaint : – “Inside of machine, baskets, lining, dispenser etc are turning gold coloured. Crockery also has gold like staining where it’s not glazed?”

Sure enough, and I’ve never ever seen this before, the whole insides of the machine have a distinct gold hue. 😕

The stainless spray arm are especially gold looking (see photo): –

I took the basket outside into the sunlight to show how gold the normally white plastic looks almost like an oven shelf and the stainless spray arm has a goldish/rainbow hue to it.

I first suspected either a pollutant from the water supply or some item had been washed in the machine and stained everything in sight, or maybe some weird detergent or additive had been applied at some stage?

Non of the above seemed to be born out in anything I checked or suspected of my customer of doing. So the whole thing is a bit of a mystery to be honest???? 🙁

What I do know is that they have always washed sterling silver cutlery in the machine from new. They don’t possess stainless cutlery in fact (rather posh folk in a country pile in deepest Berkshire in fact 😉 ) So whilst I at first advised them not to wash silver in the machine the fault has only become apparent in the last few months? So that kinda takes the silver out of the equation I would think?

The water softener is working fine. They’ve used Finish tabs for years now and Finish dishwasher cleaner applied since the outbreak…..it’s all a bit of a mystery really. 😯

Weird! I suppose you have gone through all the usual. are they using salt etc? One thing is for certain, it’s not the dishwasher, rather something that is being put into. I have had a similar problem with brown similar looking marks through lack of salt. I’ll watch this one with interest 😀 . Hope you get it sorted.

Weird it is and yes I have got the fine-toothed comb out on this one with no conclusions, hence my posting. 😕

I’ve seen many a machine’s baskets and dispenser lids turn orange after washing loads of Indian curry stained crockery. I even had a machine where the baskets etc turned blue! Plastics are one thing but the spooky part about this machine is that the stainless tub and spray arms have turned GOLD coloured too…..weird! 🙁

Lots of questions there Mark, yes mains water and inlet matrix clean as a whistle. Old house but copper piped throughout as far as I can see. I’m pretty sure it’s something that’s been introduced into the wash at some point and maybe without realising it?

Husband and wife deny any wrong doing in that regard but without a full chemical analysis of the deposits it’s impossible to even guess at what happened and when?

I simply advised them to do a number of dishwasher cleaning cycles, keep salt topped up and all should be well?….we shall see but it would be interesting to find out if someone of you guys out there have come across this before?

    We can only hope.

Never seen this myself but IMO it has to be the silver. Maybe they (or the maid) used a silver cleaner agent on it one day before putting it in the machine. If there was a sufficient quantity of silver ions present during a wash I imagine it could have somehow partially electroplated(?) the stainless, though I’m less certain about the plastic. I would think bshappliancecare would love to hear about it and would probably have seen it all before. Detergent manufacturers will also send you wads of information at the slightest request. (Useful as it saves you money on printing paper as you can use the blank sides 😀 ).

wonder what the result would be if the rinse aid was released during a heating stage rather than during a rinse???for whatever reason, jammed / sticking door??

    Just a thought, any ideas?

Rinse aid should be released during a heating phase anyway. Were it to be released into cold water overfoaming would be the result. 😉

Going off subject slightly, Is that correct? I was always under the impression rightly or wrongly that the rinse aid was added during a rinse.
Namely the rinse water would carry it to the items prior to being dried and by nature of rinse aid it is designed to breakdown the surface tension of the water.
If its added during a heat I cannot see how it would work. Hot water or heating doesnt benefit that process or improve it at all. IMO

Adding it during a rinse I understand, then heating. In theory the water has been dispersed from the pots which has now been broken down to aid dispersion and drying? Now youve got me thinking.. 💡

I have in the past added a capfull into a bucket of cold water when washing the car, throw over the car it helps the drying off process brilliantly. too much though and youve got a greasy car….

Yes to the first part of your sentence and yes again to the second part. Rinse aid solution effectively makes water wetter and runs off surfaces and dries quicker (as you’ve observed) but added to the final rinse only when the temperature of the water is above 50degs C otherwise it would foam like hell and burst through the door!

Check this out, allow a dishwasher to fill and start circulating the water around. Then open the door and throw (only 2 thimbles full equivalent mind you!) some rinse aid in and shut the door. Let it run for a couple of minutes then open the door.8O

Getting back to the turning to gold subject, I’m wondering if washing brass may cause this effect? I recall seeing a number of brass flower vases on the sink worktop though never gave it a thought to ask her if she’d washed them in the dishwasher?……anybody know if that could be a possibility? 🙁

    Re: Bosch turning to gold?

martin i have read this thread with interest and as mentioned before i tend to agree with a electroplating theory.maybe a small current passing through the machine, the brass/copper acting as anodes? could be feasible :rolls: or i could be completely wrong 😕 😕
