Just in the process of changing the bearings/rear drum/shaft spider on my FEW12 and I could use some “tricks of the trade” kind of advice. I will have to swap the heater onto the new drum. Are they easy to remove/refit? Will I need any new seals? Does the sensor that just slides through the base plate need any sealant when you refit it?

Anything else I should be aware of when I rebuild the machine? Oh yes and what’s the score on the spring clip that secures the door seal? Any special tools needed for that?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Hotpoint FEW12 questions.

the new element comes with a seal… u cannot take a seal off a element like this as its fitted whilst in the “build process”… dont go ramming a screwdriver in to prise out the old element u could damage the housing … no the thermistor doesnt need any sealant adding it will seal itself .
as for the big spring band/clamp.. its just a case of patience , no tools used ( or atleast ive never used a tool to fit one ) just gotta be real good with ur hands. 😉

    Re: Hotpoint FEW12 questions.

I usually manage to transfer 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of heating elements from old drum to the new one. Its a bit of a fiddle but it can be done. You don’t need to ‘ram’ a screwdriver in, but by carefully teasing out the rubber seal with a small flat bladed screwdriver it is possible to remove virtually any heater, getting it back in can sometimes be harder than getting it out though.

If the door seal to drum clamp is what is known as as Zipper type clamp it will have a wire band that is hooked at both ends, just remove the connecting ‘zipper’ plate by prising out one of the hooked ends and push the zipper off the other end. A pair of long nosed pliers is all that is needed to refit.

Some machines have the zipper type clamp on the outer edge of the seal and a screw tensioned clamp securing it to the drum on the inside, others have the zipper type on the inside and a wire and spring on the outside.

The wire and spring around the outer edge of the door seal can be rather tight to refit, a liberal application of washing up liquid and two small terminal screwdrivers are what I use to refit.

If you can put one of them back on with your hands I would truly like to see that. 🙂

I would always advise replacing the drum seal that fits between the two halves of the drum as well.
