ParticipantHello there have a hotpoint tdc60 and drum has stopped turning for some reason, get a burning smell from it which i think is because the fan ( i think its a fan) isnt turning due to the drum not turning. Any ideas ?
Thanks in advanceApril 28, 2009 at 2:59 pm #285224Specialist01269

Could be 1 of a number of things: Motor, Electronics, Drive Belt etc.
If you are not confident in your ability to carry out repairs please see the repairs@ link for an Engineer local to you.
If you are going to do it yourself any parts you need can be obtained from the shop@ linkPLEASE REMEMBER POWER OFF & PLUG OUT BEFORE OPENING.

1/ power off & unplug.
2/ philips screwdriver and undo (3 iirc) screws holding the lid on.
3/ look for a back rubber belt that should be around drum
4/ if missing its probbaly the belt thats caused the burning smell as the t/d drum has jammed but the motor spindle has kept spinning and generated enough heat to melt the rubber belt through
Jammed drums are usually caused by front roller supports wearing out, rear bearing spindles wearing through, or a sock etc between the drum and the front panel lip.
Either way if it is a belt and if your confident and capable then its not a ridiculously expensive job, just an afternoons work. would recommend assessing total damage first then buying what you need and replacing all worn running gear in one go, as its a lot less work and should work out cheaper than a new condenser dryer even though youve basically replaced all teh wearble bits 😀

pding, please take note. The TDC60 does not have front roller pulleys, completely different machine. Also a belt change on a condenser tumble dryer is not that simple, not really a DIY job.
If the belt has snapped the fan would still be able to run.
The fault could also be due to the motor capacitor failing.
If you are unsure of how to check any of these things then take the advice of Specialist01269 and phone an engineer.
