hotpoint washer/drier acquarius extra model wd63 . Soap powder is left in tray after wash cycle; often still dry. I have removed and cleaned soap tray and box and “blown through” the water inlet jets in the top of the box.( soap tray was clogged with gunge but not any more) yet powder still remains each time. Some water appears to be getting to the conditioned/softener slot). For info, we have a combi boiler, serviced recently; could it be hotwater pressure is too low and not getting to the soap tray?? Help/ideas, please.

Detergent is cleared by the hot water valve feeding through that compartment. Lack of pressure will leave residue. You say that you have had plumbing work performed recently, I would investigate that further.

Many thanks for your help. I will contact engineer who did the boiler service and get him to check the hot water pressure.. Are there likely to be any other reasons for washing powder being left in the tray?

If the detergent is un-touched, you may have a valve failure. If it a soggy mess that hasn’t washed in, it’s down to water pressure. Might be worth checking the mesh filter into the valve. System work can dislodge all sorts of muck and goo.

Set the machine to a wash programme and open the drawer just enough to see if water is flowing into the compartment. You’ll need tp drop a towel down, as some water will dribble down the front.

Chesham, this fault can also be caused by setting the program knob one click past the beginning of the program. There is a positive click at the beginning of each program where the hot is taken and soap washed in up to a set level. The next, lighter click is where the first tumble allows clothes to soak up the water. It then tops up with cold only back to the set level allowing the electronics to determine the cold pressure and the amount of washing in the drum, so that it knows how much water to take on the rinses, which are timed fills. If you miss the first positive click, you miss the hot fill position and the soap doesn’t go in.

On the 95° and 60° cottons wash the machine fills initially through the hot valve only. On the next step it fills both hot & cold, it does not switch off the hot fill on any of the wash fill programmes except prewash. All the other programmes are mixed fill.

I have the control unit sequence chart open in front of me. 😉

Sometimes the higher hot water pressure from a combi can cause problems with a hot valve. If there is a tiny defect in the valve diaphragm it will sound as though the water is gushing in but if you look at the back of the drawer it will be trickling down.

I assume the water to the machine was not turned off when the boiler was attended to.

Many thanks for these helpful suggestions and we will investigate. Is the valve and filter mesh something I can get at and replace with a spare or do I need an engineer?

Are you suggesting that the water supply to the washing machine should always be switched off before the combi boiler is serviced?

This is all really helpful – thank you!

No need for an engineer….simply turn off the taps to the machine and unscrew the hoses. The filter mesh is situated in the back of the valve and you will soon see if it’s clogged when you take the hose off. If it is then carefully withdraw from the valve (long nose pliers might help here) and give it a good wash off using something like an old toothbrush.
Push it back in, reconnect hoses and turn taps on.

No, but it wouldn’t be the first time that washer taps have been turned off but not back on afterwards. I wondered if he had to move the washer to access the boiler in any way thats call.

Re: soap powder not taken up

If the plastic finger levers supplying your machine have been turned off for some reason and then back on, make sure the hot valve feed has not “rubbed over” its shaft, these levers have a tendency to snap and make it look like you have turned it back on fully but have not, if the lever seems stiff to turn then unscrew the plastic finger grip and check the valve has actually opened.
