iv put a site on offering repair service on net for local work and working ok, im thinking of going 1 step futher and putting a few pages of common parts maybe for local customers for identification then to call in and buy, now the the first problem is the tedious task of taking photographs of each part which id like to avoid, i know im probably correct in assuming any pictures from major suppliers are copyright i use qualtex for most things and there pictures are watermarked so for curiosity i went on google images and to my surprise found a site that looks like a major player offering all sorts of diy supplys and noticed that the washing machine spares were all qualtex pictures without the watermark installed?

1 were have they obtained the images from them a disc of some kind?
    2. would they have gained prior permission from qualtex?

iv included the link incase anyone would like to confirm this

They’ll either have done a deal or can be asked to remove them/watermark them.

You can’t use copyrighted material without permission and if you do, you could find yourself having to pay for the privilege.

    Hi Si,
The images probably came from the old Spareslink CD Qualtex used to send out, the images didnt have watermarks on.

With regard to copyright, the internet is awash with copied and plagerised images, its got to the stage where its almost impossible to retain any rights over abstract images like this.
Even if the image owner did discover you using there image, have they copyrighted it themselves? and would they go to the lengths of asking you to remove it? I doubt it very much.

My friend who runs http://www.appliancesparesandparts.co.uk obtained express permission from Qualtex to use their catalogue images and part numbers. It can be done!

With all the plethora of appliance spare parts available over the Internet and the many and varying prices of them from Ebay to Espares would someone really call in your shop and buy?

I’m not wishing to kill the idea here so much as trying to figure, on your behalf that is, how it would work for you? How, by identifying pumps, valves, filters, door boots, stats etc etc….putting all those pictures on your site and all the hastle that entails…how they would then come in your shop and buy across the counter?

Short of going the whole hog and competing directly with Espares and co, on the Internet, big time, I can’t see exactly how this idea would work for you?

Just to emphasis my point here if I may? My web site generates an awful lot of enquiries, I get calls from all over the r8DDy country in fact at all hours of the day and night. As a typical example, last Saturday evening I get a call :-

“Sorry to bother you late on a Saturday night but I’ve found your web site. The hinge has broken on my Hotpoint WM64 and I’d need a new one! Do you stock hinges? You’re not far from us as it happens. Can my husband call by and get one off you?”

When I told her I was not short of hinges as it happens, she asked how much? Now I know for a fact that Hotpoint retail these darn things for over £10 and that with P&P you can stick another fiver on that. I said I could let her husband have a new hinge and pick it up from my house on Sunday morning for the princely sum of £10 cash. She said she could get one for £8 off the Internet (including P&P apparently???). :rolls:

I was less than polite at that stage and informed her of various options in order to resolve her problem in the fervent hope it would never ever involve me or my business at that point in time or any time in the near or distant future…. 😉

As far as coming into your shop and buying spares across the counter?…..Nah! I’ll spare you my experiences of that business for another day, another thread. Suffice to say, been there, got the friggin obligatory T shirt an all!

Hi martin, i did have a shop but due to illness gave it up so have built a workshop at the back of my house to be honest it was a relief giving up a shop that was just draining anway i get plenty of repairs and spend most of time out working on road, i keep all overheads to a bare min and its working quiet well this way iv been their and got the t-shirt with paying stacks of bills and taking nothing home some weeks.

its more of a case of count the pennys and the pounds seems to look after themselves more of a spreading my wings iv started to recondition and do sell the odd new appliance as well,

iv had similar tel calls were the customer has said they can obtain spares cheeper its just plain barmy i know, i have had local enquires for spares from people close by so i do agree with what your saying about the time and effert i suppose the gain would be more content on my site that makes things look a bit better maybe? and reinforces that i sell spares,

simonb wrote:and reinforces that i sell spares,

Fair enough and more power to your elbow I guess then. 🙂

Another word of caution…….having a workshop at the back of your house may be subject to local rules on planning permission? Selling spares and allowing customers direct access to your property may also constitute the need for a trading license, business rate taxes and all that nonsense one has to comply with these days. 🙁

Once the local authority gets wind of someone running a business from home that’s beyond a simple office desk, computer and telephone within the walls of the main residence, things can get a little complicated for you. 😉

    Mind how you go! 8)
