I normally try to keep a good selection of brushes in the van as they are the most commonly required parts. Just lately I seem to be struggling a bit though, raking around for something to fit FHP motors. I’m wondering if the design has been modified on the FHP holders. I thought when these motors first appeared that it was possible to use loose Bosch carbons in the FHP brass holders. I’ve not had to do this for a while as I usually keep the complete FHP brushes in the van. One day a couple of weeks ago I ran out of these and needed to use the Bosch ones but the tags would not fit the brass holders. I have some similar AEG loose carbons but whilst the tag on these was OK, the carbon was too thick for the FHP holders. Today I went to a newish Zanussi with FHP motor. Again the Bosch and AEG loose carbons were not suitable but the plastic holders were the “R” type, as opposed to the “L” type used by Hotpoint. I ended up using the brass holders from the Hotpoint ones in the original plastic holders. 😕

I’m just a tad confused having read your post and what would be helpful is knowing what newish Zanussi you refer to (i.e Model No?)
The FHP brushes I carry on the van are the CAR90 (that’s the long AEG type) and the short, but same fitting CAR91. Early AEG’s with an FHP motor you can fit the loose CAR48’s to the holders but beyond that I’ve not come across any variants. 😕

I swap carbons, holders, brass inserts at random until I find something that fits. On occasion, to save having to make a second visit to a remote job I just polish the burnt face of the old carbons and splice in a section of carbon cut from some new brushes the right size. They’re mostly 12×5.
One of these bounced back the other day. Had to replace the carbons on a Zanussi. At the job, I remembered that it hadn’t been long ago I did them before. Turned out my chopped in section of one brush had split along lamination. Anyway, had the right ones with me on this occasion.
When I got home, checked my records. Was a whole three years back I’d done them before!

That sounds a bit dodgy 😯 Why don’t you just cut the wires to the old carbons and solder on complete new ones?
Machine with the FHP motor was model FS1155W.

That’s a good idea. I’ll probably do that in future. Reason I didn’t before was because I thought they needed to be spot welded as that’s how they appear to be attached originally. I imagine it might be difficult getting enough heat onto the brass holder to make a good joint as the holder will sink the heat away. But I’ll give it a go.

The handgun type of iron is 100w i used it all the time for this kind of work with brushes, no problems at all, good solid fix too.

If you cut the wire on the old and new brushes to just over half the original length and solder them together you wont need to heat the brass. You do need to give the old wire a good scrape with the Stanley knife to remove any carbon dust and oxide.
