    Hi there
Recently moved house (1930’s semi) and not entirely happy with the Hygena oven that we’ve inherited. I’d like a multifunction oven that does conventional and fan.
Trouble is that the Hygena is installed on 13 amp socket (shares a double socket with microwave) and it seems that nowadays most ovens (especially multifunction ones) require hardwiring by an electrician. Not too sure of what that means just that it appears to involve breaking up the kitchen to run new cables etc. 😕

Seeing that we can’t afford a new kitchen just yet, is there anything that an electrician can do that doesn’t involve taking the kitchen apart? If so, what would be maximum watts for a single oven (I’ve given up on my initial idea of a double oven! 🙁
    TIA

As a rule for multifunction ovens the minimum rating is a 30 amp supply and many go to 45 amp. So it would involve chasing the wall adjacent to the oven and installing a new cable back to the consumer unit. They can also do the same using surface mounted cable behind trunking if that is acceptable to you, though visually pretty naff. 🙁

Going back to you wanting a multifunction oven? Why? They need more power, as you have discovered, cost more to run and by definition are less efficient. So why compound the problem when you can’t afford a new kitchen right now?….

    😉 😀

    Thanks Martin
I was just so used to being able to choose fan or conventional ‘modes’ with my previous oven in my old house… I always chose ‘conventional’ for baking and much prefer it for baking (the Hygena is a fan oven). Looks like I’ll just have to review my options and get used to cooking with a fan oven….Does anyone know of a fan oven that is reliable for baking? 😆

hi,there are single ovens out there that will quite happily run on a single socket and are fitted with 13amp plugs, but you will find these are budget end range.HTH 🙂
