ParticipantHi ,I am new to the forum and wondered if anyone could help me?
I have been given by my local take-away a large Norcool drinks chiller.
The previous owner said it needed a new fan (the external one that helps cool the motor/compressor). He gave me the old one which had previously been removed by persons unknown.
I powered the fan from a seperate source and as he said it was jammed . After cleaning and lubricating it all, it started and spun effortlessly.
After refitting it to the cabinet ,I switched the chiller on.The compresser gets so hot ( A drop of water spashed on evaporated in seconds )you couldnt touch it after about an hour. The newly fitted fan never started and I have no idea why,.so it was unable to help with cooling the motor and I have my doubts as to whether it would ever be effecient enough to keep it cool.
The chiller did get cold internaly ,but with the heat generated by the motor I would not turn it on and leave it unattended indoors.
What causes the fan to kick in ,is it thermostaticaly controlled or is it pressure.
More to the point is it worth calling somone out or does it sound to expensive to fix.
I reckon the unit if working is worth around £100.
Many thanks in advance for any advice . 😕May 26, 2009 at 8:54 pm #287895spimps

UNPLUG FIRST PLEASE!
Hi,I presume you are describing the condenser cooling fan(condenser is a radiator looking device)at the rear which cools the liquid refigerant in the tubing of the condenser,if this isn’t running the compressor will become exsessively hot and refrigeration will be poor or non exsistant.Condenser MUST be clean and dust free too.The fan usually comes on with the compressor, often connected to the compressor terminals, worth checking out as previous interference may have left something adrift.May 26, 2009 at 10:11 pm #287896kandj46

Hi Spimps, firstly I apologise for my poor descriptions.
The fan I am talking about is bolted to the bottom /rear of the cabinet and faces away from what I call the compresser or motor ( a large black cylinder).Although it faces away it would circulate quite a lot of air around the motor. You are quite correct in thinking that perhaps I have connected the fan incorrectly.
Three terminals , positive, negative and earth how difficult can it be ? lol
Still bet your life I have managed it wrong.
I know you cannot give advice on electrical connections ,but basically
the spade connections on the neg and earth connection connected to the only place they would reach on the terminal connections of the commpressor. The third (live) connection didnt have a spade and I connected it to an unused live terminal on the compressor.
I am not sure I am making it very clear, but I was fairly cofident that they were the right connections at the time i made them.
Never the less the fan never kicked in even though I know it works when connected to an external power supply.May 27, 2009 at 5:37 am #287897spimps

`”the fan comes on with the compressor”the answer is in there somewhere :)If in doubt stick a photo up so we can see if the fan is positioned correctly.
