ParticipantTall (1.9m high) Indesit fridge (top) freezer (bottom) both fridge & freezer run off same compressor (cheap?).
Model C139, Cod 9324465000, s/n 201222611
Fault – Compressor is hot & it will run for ~20 seconds (motor runs) if the mains is switched off & on. Obviously its not cold inside anymore & everything is now in the camping fridge or being cooked/eaten!
Fault possibly caused by the better 1/2 loading the door up with wine till it came open & the thing was running full tilt with the door open for a couple of hrs.
Any ideas whats bust?
Thanks Hitchphil

Obviously to do with compressor:
could be a mechanical or electrical fault inside the compressor which is causing an overload device inside the compressor to cut the motor out.
Could be the relay/start device although it doesn’t sound like it,possibley a refrigerant leak coulds have caused the motor to run hot and then do damage internally.
leaving the door open overnight wouldn’t cause the fault as thats the same as having it on fast freeze which is simply running 24 hours so the compressor should be capable of that.
Looks like you have an expensive fault either way, compressor fitted from £180 ish.

ParticipantIs there an over load inside the compressor? Didnt think there was? thought it may be to do with ‘relay’ bolted on the side.
No refrig leaks.
Can any one tell me how to bypass the relay bolted on the side to test the compressor?
Not paying £180 for new compressor as I can get similar fridge/freezer for £90 on ebay but would pref to fix this if its a simple fault like relay.
Only 6 years old not good to send it too land fill so young! Thanks for reply.May 28, 2009 at 4:52 pm #287931spimps

There’s been an overload in every compressor I’ve handled,thats 5 or 6 a week for 35 years 😯
Otherwise when relays fail the internal windings will FRYthey also protect against other starting issues.
No bye pass to relay possible, it and the motor windings work together.
If it goes to land fill it certainly won’t be the youngest there, shame,we all deplore the fragile life that seems to be built into most white goods, sadly those who can least afford to replace stuff often are the ones suffering most.

ParticipantCheers I am corrected on overload protection inside compressor then. So does your last post suggest that it might be a relay fault? I listened to it last night & found when you turn it on the compressor it hums then stops. Not sure it actually runs its either a very quiet compressor or the motor stator powers up & hums but it does not actually turn over. Does that suggest a more definative fault?

If after it hums there is an audible click then it will be the overload cutting power to the compressor. Why is the question, either relay or compressor.
The relay /ptc device may be the fault but it’s not possible to be definitive, however as the cost of a replacement is relatively cheap ie £20 ish it’s worth a try.May 29, 2009 at 4:19 pm #287934hitchphil
ParticipantListened using a screwdriver as a ‘stethascope’ No click, just a hum & no mechanical motion just electrical stator hum. Might try replacing the relay as thats diy easy. Thanks for your insight & help.

Hello Helo-75 – Gosh nearly 3000 posts are they all the same sort of crass arrogant cross post rubbish then? I can only guess when you got over a certain number you had nothing better to contribute eh?
For the record – product / wife abuse probably contributed to its failure, its 6 years old so am annoyed & will probably avoid Indesit as a brand for the replacement & have thus no intention of ‘suing’ the now bankrupt highstreet retailer for a replacement.
Thanks to others who have tried to help. 😀
