ParticipantMachine fills up for a few seconds, the timer clicks round to the first rinse and it pumps out for a few seconds and so on until it completes the programme within the space of about a minute. If you put it on a spin it will do about a minute of the spin programme, pumping and agitating, before clicking to the end position. I’ve checked the brushes, the heater, the valves and the NTC. I’ve also changed the timer/module. The old timer rattles as though there’s something loose inside but the fault remains with the replacement one fitted. This is not new and came from a different model but has the same numbers, 513 214 124 75 26 02. Any thoughts?

My first thought was that perhaps it was a broken timer indicator dial and therefore not set on programme correctly. But as you’ve changed the timer then I guess you would have spotted that anyway.
So, I can only think that either the pressure switch is up the creek or maybe somehow there’s a connection wrongly placed on the timer block?

I actually had to renew all 3 parts of the timer knob assembly as someone (Service Farce?!) had glued the outer knob on and I had to use brute force to break it off. I think the connection blocks will only fit the correct way on these and in any case would not explain the original fault. I don’t think in this case the customer has had a go.

Have you meggered the motor? I had a machine a while back with a fault like this and found it to be a shorting armature. 😉

Machine is mine now as the customer got fed up and bought a new one. I tried a different pressure switch which made no difference. I don’t think it’s the motor as it sometimes spins OK on the long spin. It never manages the whole spin but sometimes stays on long enough to pick up speed. This is the “Quick & Clean” model so there is an additional control for supposedly adjusting the programme time. Could this gubbins be at fault?

Found the problem, a pinhole in the NTC 😀 When I checked the NTC initially I got a reading of 21K which is about right. At the time I had not tested the machine with water, I had only been trying it on spin and at that stage it seemed to complete a spin OK, much to the surprise of the customer. They had been using it on the L wash so I tried that next and witnessed the sort of problems described earlier.
Yesterday I was given a rather rusty but working Zanussi Nexus. I decided to fit the complete top panel from that plus wiring harness to the non rusty but faulty FLS1185QW. This is fairly easy, you just disconnect the motor, pump, heater etc wiring, unscrew the interlock, pull off the pressure switch pipes and lower the suspension springs. The top panel can then be unscrewed and lifted off, complete with fascia, soap dispenser, timer, switches, valves, pressure switches etc and the harness retaining trunking just unclips from the cabinet. In this case there was a complication in that the Nexus has 2 pressure switches so I had to also fit the Nexus filter housing with the extra hose outlet. Tried it, same symptoms as before 😥 Tried swapping motors, no different. Tried swapping NTCs, success. Checked the resistance again on the old NTC now only 5K. I suppose on my first visit they had not tried the machine for a few days and the NTC had dried out but when I tried it on a wash it had filled with water, lowering its resistance.June 18, 2009 at 6:29 pm #289149Penguin45

Well that was entertaining. The things we get up to when we’re not busy!
Surely all this stuff you’ve learned will come in useful one day. Except you’ll have forgotten it by then! 😆
