All is well in terms of error lights etc and the washer appears to go through the normal sequence however no water is coming out of the top jet.

Water is being supplied to the bottom (i.e. if I force the door switch I can watch it working) and the bottom pump is working but nothing from the top.

My trawl around the forums would suggest possibly a solenoid value, but thats just my guess

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    John

Do you mean the there is no water coming from the upper spray arm? The same pump supplies the bottom and top spray arms.

If this is the case the top spray arm could have a blockage.

Please un plug the dishwasher if investigating! 😉

Yes no water from the upper spray arm

So you’re saying if water is coming out of the bottom then all is well and the spray arm or associated plumbing must be blocked ?

Actually incorrect, lots of dishwashers have diverter valves that switch the water flow between the top and bottom spray arms. If the mechanism that controls this fails then you will only get a flow to one spray arm.

Hopefully one of the trade members more familiar with Smeg applainces than I am may give you a ‘proper’ answer later.

That is part of the plumbing on the machine!! Not all machines have these!

This valve may have something jammed in it, causing it to have a restricted movement, or not to move at all.

Also was repairing our Caremark dishwaher about 5 years ago, it had no diverter valve, the pipe just split in to directions, it was this pipe that had split causing it to leak, found it had no diverter valve completely by accident!!

    All the best

    Oliver,

I see from your profile that you are a carpet cleaner by trade, I have only been in my chosen trade for over 40 years so it follows that you will be far better placed than I am when it comes to offering advice to the general public. :rolls:

I do think that I may have a slightly better idea than you do as to what is or is not inside a dishwasher. 😉

ragman, please wait until you have had a more informed reply from another ‘trade’ member before you attempt to ‘unblock anything.

    Jim.

The machine is a DWI612C. It is not fitted with an alternator valve to switch the water flow.

    Possible problems therefore are:

1/ Circ pump running slow (start/run capacitor failing).
2/ Partial blockage almost anywhere in the pipework, including the circ pump impellor itself.
3/ Underfilling due to sludge build-ups in the water matrix and associated pipework.
4/ Impellor shearing off the circulation pump can still give limited circulation, although any flow would be weak. As you have run the machine with the door open, you should have got soaked…….

Oliver, whilst it’s good fun to join in with the discussions on the board, you do need to be able offer a reasonable and reasoned solution to the problems posed – there is no one single guaranteed answer to this particular problem.

    Hi Iadom

I do not doubt that for one second, what you don’t know about dishwahers is not worth knowing. Your knowledge will be breath-taking!!!
    🙂
I was only meaning not all dishwashers have a diverter valve.

Ours had the pipe blocked to the top spray arm, some one does not scrape plates in our house! So bottom one worked top one did not, also no-one cleans the filters either! 🙁 (Only me)!

    Take care
    😉
    Oliver
