ParticipantHello
My brother is looking for a washer/dryer. I would appreciate any help you can give with regards to a good quality machine that will last for a while.
Many thanks. 😀

KeymasterThe best possible advice I can give on a washer dryer… don’t buy one. 😉
They’re all a compromise and most are desperately bad.

Oh dear. That’s a shame. As he’s in a flat, my brother was hoping to get an all-in-one. Is it because if one didn’t work, the other wouldn’t either?

That’s one reason.
Others include, far more unreliable. Performance on drying is seriously, seriously bad. They suck up electricity on dry like you wouldn’t believe. They block up with fluff regularly. You can only dry a pitiful amount and, use ludicrous amounts of electricity to do so.
Need I go on? 😉

My neighbour has a Hotpoint washer-drier, and the the damn thing takes 2 and a half hours to dry half a load of towels, then she has the other half to dry! 👿
They really are bad, also fluff accumulates around the door glass and door seal and unless you remove it, it will go all over your nice clean washing! :rolls:
Miele do one, they know the fluff build up is a problem as the machine has a “Rinse Out Fluff Cycle”, it says run after every 2 drying loads.Kwatt is right, do not buy one. They are not as good as seperate units.
They also use a hell of alot of cold water in the condenser unit. So they really are gready appliances! Very expensive to run. 🙁
Hope this is some use to you
😉

It’s all to easy to recognise the negative aspects of washer-dryers and much has be said on that so far at least. However a washer-dryer is the only possible solution for those that live in flats and apartments. In fact the vast majority of washer-dryers sold in the UK are by those that live in flats.
For a single person they represent the ideal washer solution, an all in one package that does the job ideally. Dirty washing in, fresh and dry coming out, ready to wear or place in the wardrobe or drawer…sorted! 😀
The time it takes and the respective energy consumption is of little relevance to the necessity of such a device in today’s get up and go world. Besides there is simply no other possible option due to the confined space, no radiators, washing lines and hardly room to swing a cat never mind putting up a clothes airer.
I speak with some first hand knowledge on the subject as my daughter lives in a one bed apartment. Has a kitchen just large enough for a fridge/freezer, cooker, sink and her much loved Hotpoint (WD62P) washer-dryer. 😀

My brother is in a one bed flat too, but he has a pulley on the ceiling, gets a load on it and its out the way. Or if its big stuff, he makes a day of it at the laundrette. Probably doesn’t help you though.

The pulley at the ceiling is called a “Creel” up here in Yorkshire! By heck you’ve brought back some memories with one of those, my uncle had one many, many years ago!! 🙂

dont forget to iron those items before you wear them Martin 😉 , your quite right they are a good option as long as you are aware of the down sides. i am sure some of the modern zanussi or electrolux machines do quite a good job of drying without getting too choked up, also i think the trickle of water used in the condenser isn’t on all the way through the cycle, better if you are on a water meter. you can only dry half a load, so if you select wash and dry you can only wash half a load, so maybe getting the larger drum size would be best. zanussi (ZWD14581W1) do this one with 1400 spin (better the spin speed less work for the dryer) and 7kg load.
