ParticipantWe’ve just moved into a new pad with a Miele Honeycomb Care W460 washing machine – and I was thrilled with the thought of a Miele 😀
However, after every wash the tray where the fabric conditioner goes and the section behind that where it drains is full to the brim of water, and has to be emptied. And most importantly – clothes just aren’t coming out smelling or looking properly clean.
The landlord has a look at it and cleaned the filter, which hasn’t solved the problem. Before I ask him again, I thought I’d ask here if there’s anything (simple as hell) which I can do to cure it. I’m asking for something simple as my fella is away and my only interaction with any washing machine has been to put clothes in it and press ‘go’ :rolls: 😆
Thank you 😀

A good read HERE
The linked articles at the bottom of that page are worth reading as well.

Thanks iadom. That article was interesting – although I think I’m doing everything right (apart from not knowing about maintenance washes 😳 ). Everything seems clean in the drawer and the bit where the drawer goes. I’ve just put it on with soda crystals at 95 degrees in the hope that might help. But because the water’s not draining from the tray I suspect there’s more to it than that….

Not too familiar with Miele but in almost every instance that the water is retained in the rinse aid compartment it is either in need of a good clean with the complete drawer removed from the machine, there may be a small piece that you can remove to clean, or it may have this a piece missing, some part of the rinse aid dispenser is a syphoning device to drain the water out after the final rinse.
Soda crystals are not a lot of use. Ordinary detergent ( must be tablet or powder ) is better.
If the machine is really smelly then we have some excellent cleaning products in our shop@ HERE

Thank you for all the advice. Following further advice from Miele we have cleaned the jets (little sprays above the drawer) and run it through twice at 95° with biological powder.
This has improved the smell a little but we still have two problems:
1. Clothes come out smelling a bit cleaner but must still have bacteria on them as after 1/2 an hour of my OH wearing a T-shirt, it smells! He doesn’t having just showered so it’s like body heat is ‘activating’ the smells / bacteria which the washing machine has failed to remove 😥
2. The fab con part of the drawer is still full of water after every wash and needs to be emptied into the sink before we can use it. I’m less bothered about this than the smell (see above) but mention it in case it helps someone know what this is!
Our landlord reckons that the machine is fine, that every drawer gets full of water and the clothes smell alright – but they really don’t. So we’ve said that as it seems subjective, we’ll pay the engineer callout fee – so before we have to do that I’m hoping that someone will have some clever suggestion that could solve my problems!

ParticipantHi Owlish,
Try changing the soap you use, if you use liquid use powder. If you use powder use liquid.I often recomend to my customers doing this, can guarantee this will work, (as a temporary fix until the drum is cleared of mouldy detritus.).
good luck.

Slightly incorrect.
Liquids contain no bleach and have no sterilisation properties really, they also don’t brighten whites/lights other than by way of an optical brightener which for most things is about as much use as a chocolate firegaurd. Absolutely fine for colour washes though.
Liquid detergent will not remove any residues inside the tank as there’s nothing in it to do that and, in any case, it’s usually using liquid detergent exclusively that causes the problem in the first place.
Which leads me to the one question that perhaps should have been asked so that correct advice can be given, what detergent are you using?
Also, what sort of laundry are you doing, is it stuff for gym use and the likes?
If you’ve run a hot wash with detergent and no laundry it’s effectively what’s called a maintenance wash, more info from the link.
Often that can make the smell worse before it gets better, especially of there is a considerable build up which is also the case when you use products to clean it away such as Affresh or Smelly Washer both of which will solve the problem but will also cost a bit of money. It is a known and common issue with front loaders often through people misunderstanding the use of modern machines and detergents as the technologies in both have moved on apace and changed over the years.

Is it just as simple as that the conditioner dispenser is blocked up & not syphoning correctly or that machine is not level? Take out drawer, remove condtioner syphon & clean.

Thanks Kwatt – that’s v useful to learn.
I was using Fairy non-bio (didn’t dare risk my eco-balls as didn’t think they’d work as Fairy wasn’t working well), but I am now using Aerial Bio on maintenance and some heavy soiled washes.
It’s on everyday washes that I’m noticing it. Fella’s not especially smelly ( 😆 ) but his t-shirts were coming out with an ‘underarm’ smell still on them. This never happened in our last flat with our cheap and cheerful hotpoint, so I’m certain it’s the machine. Also, putting in a white flannel which had been used to wipe a chocolatey toddler’s face, and seeing it wasn’t coming out clean.
Stuff comes out smelling of detergent, but underneath that, it doesn’t smell quite clean, if you see what I mean.
The machine is level, the filter has been cleaned out and the drawer / jets ahve been thoroughly cleaned.
The Affresh looks good – is it as good as the more expensive one? Definitely sounds worth a go before calling Miele engineers out.

ParticipantHi Owlish,
Glad clotheas are starting to smell better, I used to get called out to loads of smelly washer issues, there really is nothing that can be done that requires putting tools on, if you call the engineer out it will be advice only!
Keep up the maintenance washes!

Don’t use them, have a read of this!
Basically they don’t work.
Boselecta is totally correct, any smell from the washing machine will, unless it’s the smell of something burnt and it doesn’t work anymore, will not be the fault of the washing machine and an engineer will not be able to resolve the problem. He’ll simply advise accordingly.
One more thing though, you’re not using short low temperature washes all the time are you as, that could be an issue?
