ParticipantThe bearing on my washing machine is past it’s best and the father inlaw asked his friend if he could fix it. To which the reply was that if the machine is WM model that they don’t fix them as they are a waste of time to fix and you’d be better off buying a new machine.
Is this the case if not what would be an approx repair cost. I wouldn’t mind having a go at it myself, but the missus wouldn’t trust me, plus the grief i’d get if i did get it wrong would be unbearable.
Should i buy a new machine which, would be best suited to a family of 5 and is used on average 5 times a week. Cost is not the biggest issue as I would go for quality that would lasts…………
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tell your father in law to pick his friends with more care. :rolls:
It really depends how long you have been running the machine with faulty bearings. If there is a lot of ‘up & down’ movement of the inner drum then the bearings may have collapsed and also damaged the drum shaft.
It is not really a simple DIY job but is do-able with the correct tools and a bit of mechanical savvy.
You would have to spend over £300 to £350 to get a machine anywhere near the one you currently have and £400 to £450 upwards for anything really decent.
In the trade we still do lots of bearing repairs on these machines with a very high success rate. The best thing to do is to try and strip it down first and see if you can get the old bearings out, also inspect the condition of the drum support shaft at the same time.
There is a complete kit which includes drum support & bearings. you should also fit a new drum front seal.
Jim.
PS. Not to keen on your username, this is a ‘family’ forum. 😉

Not sure if it’s in the latest edition but this job was covered in the Haynes manual for washing machines, which you may be able to borrow from your library. I would agree, this is a well designed machine and well worth fixing.

Just to add to this, I have done three such bearing repairs this week alone.
All well under £100. All three machines will, with luck be good for another five or six years which is more than can be said for any sub £300 machine on the market today.
