ParticipantDidn’t make any unusual noise while I was there, but she could only manage to get a half load together to test it. :rolls:
Didn’t pull it out because had had a long day and it is well stuck in.
So she reckons it gives a groaning noise just before spinning. I was thinking elastic belt but looked it up and it’s listed as a vee belt.
Am I on the right track?

Hi Mike,
Pumps make a groaning noise when the magnet chamber fills with water and the grease disppears. No other fault could make this noise and it must be 10yrs+. Very common.
Let us know

Still not been back yet (bit out of the way) and she called today to ask if any progress. Discussing it with her I discovered that it only makes this noise when it’s on its second load in succession; first load no noise at all. I think some people don’t have enough to worry about but that aside, I’m thinking it could be the main bearing beginning to go. Had one like that a while back. Cheap as chips as far as the kit’s concerned so I might go prepared to do that.

Mike take a pump too. Bet you a tenner to charity. The way I check, fill and then push and pull timer out several times to stop and start pump, if it clatters or groans a new one. Sometimes they need to warm up.
Trust me I’m a doct….no, wrong but 19 years on SUK machines.

Well, I bow to your superior experience. Not going to bet against you on this. I was going to take the pump along anyway (Thursday); maybe it’s safe to leave my bearing tools at home, job’s obviously not urgent anyway. I use the switch on the wall to check pumps in the same way you use the on/off switch, cause I figure the on/off switch will probably burn out if I give it too much work 😆 . Pity you can’t do this so easily with electronically controlled machines.

Yes Mike,
this is one of the best machines AM made, simple and reliable and bloody heavy unlike the rubbish they made recently. I would sell lots if they were still around and have thought of getting one to refurb for myself as no one seems to have an old quartz 😥
Good luck with it.
Rob
Oh, and I wasn’t dissing you but if it is the pump will still put a tenner in a charity box. 😆July 13, 2009 at 11:02 pm #290548leavemetogetonwithit

Not what I wanted to hear! It’s jammed into a utility room hardly wider than itself and sat on a raised plinth under a worktop. 😡
Get your tenner ready, I’ll have earned it. 😆
Had one similar last week, just the door catch broken. Luckily the common type you can get a pattern spare for, Servis door catch kits seem to be shooting up in price.

If when you get the back of, the pump has a cream coloured body and red stator then its the pump 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}.
They make an unearthly noise but only after a couple of washes back to back .

Thanks for that Lawrence, I won’t bother carting my bearing tools out now. Yeah I’ve seen those pumps before. Not bad really to have lasted so long considering what a budget model they were. Wonder how many other people thought, as I did, that they were just a heap of junk when they first appeared.

Well I swapped the pump yesterday and not heard back yet. I’m sure your diagnosis was right. The bearing was sounding fine and the belt looked good too.
The old pump didn’t look quite right. I think what had happened is the “backplate” behind the impellor which normally carries the top bearing had come loose and was presumably flapping around. The top bearing itself seemd OK though and it was very hard to pull out the rotor and there was no sludge in there. So you’ve saved me buying a belt which would not have ever got used and saved me some effort lugging bearing tools around.
I guess I should ask you Rob what your preferred charity is and yours too, Lawrence, and donate some of my ill gotten gains. 😀

Mike,
My charity is “The Piddle Inn” but seriously I’ll put mine in the local hospice shop. Which pump was it, sounds like the black Plaset as you could get it apart.
Anyway, glad to help
Rob
And remember you said you can walk in the door and without doing anything they sometimes fix themselves so wait for that knock on the door when I’m stuck 😆

Ah that must be the famous Piddletrenthide (sp?) by the river Piddle?
As for the pump it was the red and yellow plastic bayonet job as indicated by Lawrence. Had to really pull hard to get that rotor out.
Always like to have a look at the bits I take out – it’s educational and it often confirms the diagnosis where there’s any doubt.
Cheers again,

Hi Rob, Actually I lived in Shaftesbury for a couple of years in the early nineties. During my last six months there I did a one day a week NVQ course in (agricultural) estate management at Kingston Maurward to relieve the boredom of not having much work. Good course for getting a taster of a wide range of building maintenance and tractor driving skills. Used to do nature conservation work with a group called the Dorset Countryside Volunteers at weekends. Friendly crowd, still going strong.
Think I must have driven past a sign sometimes saying Piddletrenthide, but that’s all I remember. Used to quite enjoy driving round the country lanes of Dorset between jobs.
Are you born n’ bred thar?
