ParticipantHi all,
New to the forum and looking for a little advice.
It would appear that the heating element in my Zanussi DW908 dishwasher has packed up. The water doen’t get hot during the cycles and the contents remain wet. Once completed the heating element doesn’t feel “Hot” to the touch.
Is this a simple replacement, any advice would be greatly appreciated
Regards

Lots of possibilities with this one, but one over-riding fact should be considered. It’s controlled by an electro-mechanical timer, which is stationary during the heat phase. The thermostat in the door completes the timer circuit by closing when it reaches temperature and thus restarts the timer motor. If the machine is running through the prgramme cold, it would be reasionable to assume that the thermostat has failed in the closed position, causing the timer to run through the various heat positions.
Power off, remove outer door panel and use your test meter to check for continuity through the thermostat which is clipped to the door inner by the dispenser. It should read open circuit (ie infinite resistance) at room temperature.
That’s your starting point – check it out and report back.

Hi Penguin,
With such a prompt reply though i’d look at this asap.

Thermostat removed and shows continuity accross the terminals when tested and with the meter set at 200 ohms a reading of 00.5 is returned ?

Thermostat should read open circuit (infinite resistance) – yours is reading closed, so we have a culprit.
P/no is 50236155-00/3 – spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will be able to get you one promptly.

Hi again..
New door thermostat arrived today… Prior to fitting I tested for continuity against the old one. Strangely enough they both read the same ? Showing continuity accross the terminals (closed circuit). According to previous advice this should not be the case ! Unless I completely misunderstood. Wouldn’t be the first time in my haste..lol
Out of interest the element is showing continuity between the terminals as is the thermostat accross pairs of tag connectors (located next to heating element) ….
Many thanks DazaJuly 2, 2009 at 12:24 am #290568Daza1000

Hi,
Following my last post.
Fitted the new door thermostat anyway. Hey preston all appears to be working OK. Even run it twice just to be sure, open the door mid-cycle water is certainly hot !
Many thanks Peguin for your time and advice, greatly recieved and appreciated.
Thanks all.
PS I’ll be recommending this site to whomever needs simlar assistance

Hello.
I have the same problem with my Zanussi DW 908 not heating the water,
I have removed the door thermostat and it is open circuit ( no continuity) accross the 2 contacts.I have connected the 2 thermostat cables together breifly to see if the heater works and it did start to heat up the water so i switched it off..
Previously the washer completed all of the wash cycles but with cold water only.
Having read the rest of this post is it possible that by connecting the 2 thermostat cables together I am telling the timer that the machine has reached temperature and told the timer to carry on.
I am confused about whether the thermostat should be open or closed circuit..Please help.

Hello all.
I connected the 2 thermostat cables together and selected wash program and pushed on button. Pump started then water solenoid filled water level then heater started..Put thermometer on door casing where thermostat was and opened door when 65 degres was reached.Opened door & water was very hot so i disconnected the 2 thermostat cables & closed the door .The dishwasher ran through the complete cycle & switched off.
White Goods could not supply the door thermostat for my machine neither could Zanussi main spares in Maidenhesad who said the thermostat was now obselete.
A local repair shop quoted me £70 !!!I purchased an equivalent thermostat from RS Components Hounslow for £5.84 + VAT
Bent the wire thermostat holder to fit the new one and connected the 2 cables.
Dishwasher now works as new now.Thank you for the initial info which gave me instructions where to locate the problem.
OBSELETE ???? RUBBISH
