ParticipantHi I have a smeg dishwasher mod DF 410 W. wife is complaining (again) that the dishes are not clean. I have checked the action of the machine, i removed the sprayarms and cleaned and checked all seem to be ok. Ithen checked filters all ok. I then run machine and checked dishes. I do not think the bottom spray bar is working. when ever i open the door the spray bar has not moved and the inside of dishes are dry. Nothing is jamming the bar and i have cleaned the spray bar. where do i go now?

Hi,
Can you hear the spray arms turning when the machine is on a wash?
If so then it’s possible that the main recirculation pump (motor) has a problem which could be the actual impeller, start/run capacitor or the motor itself.
Other than the obvious that you’ve checked that’s really about it.

Hi yes i can hear the spray arms working but i think it is just the top one. I have got the back and side off the machine and checked for blockage none found. took the bottom spray arm off and checked over seems ok just thinking off running machine with sides off to see if pump works but think it must be because the top spray seems to be working?

KeymasterIf the capacitor or impeller is fault you may not get full power to the pump though. ๐

yes understand what you are saying, have just run machine empty opened door fast and can confirm that water is now coming through the bottom spray arm. will put it back together and see what happens, how can i check the capacitor and motor or is it just replace it and hope for the best?

Simple way is to use a multimeter set to ohms (รยฉ) when it’s ok the ohm meter swings back. If the meter doesn’t return it means that the capacitor is defective. In reality you can often see the meter swing up then back down.
Higher capacity capacitors stores more current than lower capacitance ones and it takes time for the meter to swing back. But it should be near instantaneous on a low value cap like this one.
Works the same with a digital or analogue meter.
This method doesn’t work with electrolytic capacitors normally used on PCB’s just in case anyone tries. ๐

Sorry forgot to add, the capacitor for that machine is this one, a 6ยตF capacitor which is a stock item and pretty cheap to take a punt on.

found the cap fixed to side of motor only got a digatal multimeter reading starts at 1.000 on cap goes to -0.001 and stays there looks a right pig of a job to change. The base of the machine looks to be solid which will mean splitting it looks like a big job

KeymasterProbably worth changing it then for the sake of a tenner.
No-one ever said doing it would be fun or easy. ๐
