Hi I need to buy a new cooker as my present one is on its last legs. Could anyone please advise my about the best makes to buy. It needs to be 60cm wide. I was looking at the Indesit KD6C35W which is a Which “best buy” but bearing in mind what has been wriiten about the quality of cheaper cookers I’m thinking that I would probably be better off spending a bit more on a better quality cooker.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Hi stillsmiling

Probably the best brands for durability and quality IMO would be Zanussi, Stoves, Cannon and Bosch. The latter, while it is a cracking product it is only a large single cavity but it does have the added advantage of a two year warranty.

personally id avoid zanussi – imo over priced for what they are, and after the last one i had to oversee a repair of – dangerous too:

8 months old, installed by currys, and was on “special offer”

it was put in a tenanted property where the first 6monthly tennants never used the oven cos the cooker “smoked” badly and only ever used the hob anyway. new tenants complained about the smoking and constant burning of food so we came to look at it!

symptoms were that the element would not regulate when it got the the temperature set, turns out the main oven thermostat was actually rigged up to the top oven and the top oven thermostat was put in the main oven!

    worst thing was that:

A: zanussi let these out onto the market, and didnt recall them – instead preferrign to sort the affected batch under warranty even though they were a fire risk! the theory in it was that the installer under testing would identify an affected one of the batch and do a swap calaiming the thermal cut out was faulty!

B: the other awful thing was that currys “trained” installation team didnt notice it under testing!!!! avoid a zkc5040!!!!

theres not a lot to separate the indesit from the hotpoints and the cannons, other than styling, colour choice, overal finish and higher spec – programmers, halogen hobs etc – the indesit is basic but under the skin has the same main “gut” parts – elements, regulators ceramic plates etc

belling & stoves are again, basically fancy finished & specced versions of new worlds, only difference is that selected stoves & belling models are now being manufactured in the uk again, if its a turkish built GDHA appliance you might as well save urself 80 quid and get a beko or leisure!

Thing is with the indesit, gdha and electrolux groups they work on a very similar basis to car manufacturers where they adopt a good better best approach to the brands under each parent companys umbrella:

skoda/seat: new world (gdha); indesit (merloni); and tricity-now obsolete/zanussi – (elux)

vw: belling (gdha); creda/hotpoint (merloni); electrolux (elux)

audi: stoves (gdha); cannon (merloni); aeg (elux)

Smegs are all style and no substance, built with the cheapest possible parts, and avoid delonghi and baumatic as their spares are extortionate! – £20 for a delonghi knob and £60 for a baumatic element! frigidaire cookers are terrible build quality! tbh on reflection there isnt actually a great deal of choice, which is probably why the indesit was voted a best buy!!!
