ParticipantHi all,
Our washing machine doesn’t seem to want to do a spin when it’s part of a wash cycle.
It counts the time down correctly, goes through a wash but skips the spin cycle (which usually happens between 11 min left and 1 min left), at 1 minute left it just sits there moving the drum side to side as though doing a wash.
Oddly, if the machine is put on a spin cycle on its own, it works fine…
Any ideas on what might cause it? I’m assuming the pump, brushes etc are okay as it can actually do a spin, just not when it is part of a programme, so a PCB type fault?
I took out the dispenser tray and cleaned all the nozzles etc, and we’ve done a few hot washes to clean the machine through, as it had also started leaving grey bots on the clothes.
I have been googling a bit and saw someone mention (for another type of machine) cleaning out the sump, but I can’t yet work out how to get the front off mine yet (!) as I guess that is below the drum…
I can’t quite suss out why a spin works on its own but not always when part of a wash, I don’t think it’s a balance issue as it’s been fine for years and we’re not doing anything different than we always have… plus it also has the problem whether its empty, half full or full…

After doing a bit of digging, I’m not certain (yet) that the element is working.
I took the front off and disconnected all the cables, tested it with my meter and it reads about 33 ohms (which I believe to be about right).
But, on a 90 degree wash, after stopping the cycle at the 15 and 30 minutes stage, then draining (without a rinse), the drum feels cold still – that said I don’t know when exactly the machine is supposed to start getting hot, so that’s a bit trial and error.
I’m loathe to order an element @ £58 only to find it isn’t that, as it’s nearly 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the price of a new machine. We’ve had a good five years or so out of this one, so i don’t want to start just swapping bits here and there until i find the problem.
Anyone have any further thoughts as to how I can narrow it down?
My wife swears that she did a 90 degree wash a few days ago and it felt warm afterwards…
Hmmm…

As I have already seen, speaking to nomadpaul is the best first step!
But before going too far on the ordering route, the grey spots you described sound slightly worrying, have they occurred in the past, and have they stopped now you have flushed the machine, and was the spin cycle programme test noticeably noisey/droney/rumbly? (with a normal load inside)
Im only asking this because its a common symptom of bearing wear, although you seem quite knowledgeable, it often goes unnoticed. If you havent already checked, check, it only takes 30 seconds – look for any noticeable play between the inner and outer drum, and if there is, bearings on their own is gonna be £50+ labour, and if you’re already in 2 minds between a new machine or repair, that would sway my decision towards a new machine. Should it be so far gone you need a new shaft its part of the spider & drum which is £150!!! But thats just a personal opinion, and I can get washers at trade price so i am biased!
If that is the case, but you want confirmation, if you give your local independant white goods shop’s engineer a call they will often write-off a call-out charge if the machine is uneconimical, providing you purchased a replacement machine from them. Would be worth asking penguin if they have that service on here too in case you were thinking of replacing it with an ISE10??

I had a similar problem previously on a Bosch about 4-5 years old the element resistance checked out fine but machine apparently not heating well or at all.
I decided to remove the element as the machine was badly scaled up in other areas making it hard to pump and drain etc.The element was badly scaled up….so I descaled it with an appropriate chemical and then ran some high temp service washes to clean the machine.
Hard water may be good to drink for our health but it sure isnt much good for washing machines……I am not in the trade btw just keen to learn and save a few pounds if I can.
If your machine is really furred up then your pump will be certainly on its last legs…this may also be why you are having probs with the washing cycle
not finishing as I believe there is a default time for the pump to empty which if exceeded (say 1min) will then cause an error. -
