KeymasterI’m at the end of my tether – any advice, suggestions very gratefully recieved.
2 Weeks ago, my aged Hotpoint washing machine appeared to die : it started it’s normal wash cycle, then abruptly stopped. I thought the drive belt at the back had gone, but on inspection it appeared fine. So me and the wife decided to buy a new machine .. an Indesit washer dryer. In the meantime, the dish washr stopped working in exactly the same way .. the wash programme started then everything stopped before it filled with water. I realised that I’d disconnected its shared water supply when I removed the hotpoint, so I thought that the dishwasher problem would be solved when I plumbed in the new washing machine.
New washing machine arrives – the man from Comet plumbs it in, and checks that it turns on ok. He leaves, and so we plumb the dishwasher back into the shared Y-Valve, and try to get everything to work. Now the new Indesit stops working shortly into it’s wash programme (although the dryer appears to work ok), and the dishwasher still stops 2 minutes into its wash programme.
What’s going on ? I’ve triple checked the water supply to both machines and the leccy supply is activating the machine ok. Clearly, there is a problem common to all 3 machines .. it’s too much of a co-incidence that all three have dies independently of each other. Could there be a problem with leccy supply fluctuations/earthing (the house wiring is a bit old and decrepit) causing the machines to only partially work ? The man from Indesit is coming next week, but I really don’t think the machine is to blame.
I’ve got a 7 week old baby daughter, and the pooey nappies pile is mounting – any advice/guidance gratefully appreciated!

Double check installation especially the inlet valves are actually opening and not just turning on the shafts.Check for kinked hoses .

KeymasterMatt,
When you say they die what, specifically, do you mean by that? Is it that the power disappears or is that the machines just stop dead with the power lights still on?
There could be several explanations depending on the circumstances but I think you’re absolutely right, it’s too much of a coincidence and there has to be a comon problem. But Ted is correct and that’s the first thing I’d check too.

Keymasterthanks for the replies, chaps.
With the dishwasher, the programme appears to start (ie the machine starts making the rightsort of noises) then the programme knob klicks round clockwise slightly, and then the machine stops : the lights are on, but it doesn’t fill with water or start washing.
The new washing machine starts it’s programme, the tub patially fills with water, then the programme knob starts turning in a clockwise direction and doesn’t stop, making a clicking noise as it goes round (the indesit instruction manual says it does this when an “anomaly” has occured). Obviously, the washing programme doesn’t kick in. In the old washer, again the programme initiated but stopped dead after about a minute, though all the lights were still on.
I though it could have been a problem with the electric supply, but I stuck a Maplin Socket Tester on the plug point, and the reading was normal.

ModeratorFrom the symptoms you have given, it would seem that although the water is entering the machine/s it is not entering them quickley enough.
Your new washing machine has a fault default mode that will cause the timer knob to keep clicking round if it detects a fault. The reason for the fault maybe that not enough water is entering the machine within the normal time allowed, causing the electronic control to ‘time out’ and default to fault mode. Double check that you are getting full water pressure at the ‘Y’ piece connector on your water supply. -
