ParticipantHi
As I’m about to redo my kitchen, I am replacing various appliances, one being my tumble dryer. The white one I have at the minute is about 8 years old, and was second hand when I bought it.
I only really use the machine during the winter to mainly dry bedding and towels. I would like a model which is not too expensive to run and will last me.
I can get a Hotpoint r grade (slight damage to side only) TCL770G for £195, compared to one with no damage for £238. I can also get a Hotpoint TCD970G r grade for £219.
I would appreciate views on the above products please, and if there are other models which you would recommend please let me know. There don’t seem to many many silver ones which have received good reviews, so I’m struggling somewhat.
Many thanks

I hate to say it but good quality and budget cannot be put in the same sentence! If you buy a “budget” appliance chances are it won’t last! :rolls:
Avoid Hotpoint (Merloni appliances) they are absolute pants, the electrics often go, especially PCBs. From experience I bought a Hotpoint washer at £500 it lasted 2.5 years and the timer and PCB went. I now have a Bosch and the quality difference is amazing. 😯

If you want budget and silver then you may be better with a White Knight, not fantastic but better than current Hotpoint dryers by some margin.
But your qualification of , ‘not too expensive to run and will last me’ is at complete odds with your desire to buy a cheap dryer, buy cheap, get cheap every time. :rolls:
A lot of Bosch dryers are actually made in Slovenia by Gorenje, they do suffer from heater failures far more than they really should. 😥
Zanussi dryers are not bad.

Funnily enough I was having this discussion the other day with someone that phoned in and, later strangely, with a trade member who sells ISE and wanted a “budget” ISE dryer.
With dryers, it’s like this…
The volumes are low, they’re only used in Northern Europe really, no requirement for them in the likes of Spain or Turkey really.
So, half the market that you have for say, washing machines, if that.
But you still have to make it worthwhile producing thousands of the things to get the economy of scale so you can get a low price, along with cutting the production costs.
It’s at odds with the market for tumble dryers.
So, we end up with essentially a load of “cheap” mass produced affairs that are of low or not especially wonderful quality.
People buy them as they’re not that expensive, not used to much and so on. Then often bemoan the fact that they’re really not all that good and tend to break after a few years.
The exceptions to the rule are the ISE10 and Miele dryers which are manufactured on a much, much smaller scale but instead of being built to a price expectation they are built to a standard in low volumes. The result are excellent machines that will last many, many years but cost in some cases more than twice what you can buy a cheap dryer for.
Thing is, the ISE and Miele will probably last more than twice the time the cheap ones will.
You pays your money… 😉
