    Hi Chaps,

This morning, at the end of a spin cycle the machine was still making the ideling noise that they make instead of switching off, then I noticed smoke in the room which smelled electrical. I switched it off and took the top off and can’t see anything burned.

Now it won’t do anything. It has power, lights on etc and still makes the noise as if its trying to do something, but there’s no drum action, no drain or pump in. The belt is intact and the motor brushes were changed about 3 months ago. When I turn the drum by hand there is a clicking noise. Is this normal or is the bearing breaking up?

It is quite old and presumably they have a finite life. The bloke who changed the brushes said that “these old things go on for years – much better than the modern things” Or is he trying to put us off buying a new one because he can see lots of potential earnings in the near future.

I haven’t got a clue where to start looking so any advice appreciated please.

Clicking noise will be a raised segment on the drive motor commutator (Where the brushes rub.). They don’t always survive the brush change for long unfortunately.

You’ll be looking at £100 plus to replace.

Thanks Penguin – As I said it is knocking on a bit. Think I’ll get a new one (Bosch probably)
