After watching the clip about “stuff” that ken posted i would of thought it a no brainer ( retail, sales etc ) but then that would depend on the salesman also?
Repairs are not that profitable these days i would of thought and judging by the posts about quiet weeks.
Vaccums are ten a pennny in tesco etc these days also , so not many repairs to those anymore unless its a miele or henry, bissell proheats and the like.
Then again that can be debateable also as iadom is none stop in hes neck of the woods.
Others also, but until the industry stops making goods that cannot be serviced and selling them at a stupidly low prices its got to be sales??
commercial can bring good income.
theres a plumber or ten in every street these days ( or atleast it seems that way )August 13, 2009 at 9:30 pm #294516maltheviking

As an individual you have to be a comprehensive engineer to survive in this industry, more strings to your bow as they say but this comes from training and experience not something you can just decide to do. I am bit puzzled to your questions are you talking about your own capabilities or are you talking about a management position?
Plumbing is a different ballgame to what this forum is about, albeit highly profitable for highly skilled plumbers, much the same for any trade.August 13, 2009 at 11:35 pm #294517Penguin45

I suppose it’s down to how you sell your skills and where you position your business.
Quality Washer Repairs says a lot in it’s name – we fix washing appliances. Washers – yup, dishwashers – yup (Love ’em). Pick up dryers as a result; yes Madame, I can fix the cooker as well (Well, OK…) and as a result have managed to stay completely away from refrigeration for many years. However, Mike does them for us (I do his washers 😀 – it all works out about even).
Now you have to position the business to fit the skill set. With us, it’s property work. Unwanted work round Leeds, which is daft. Leeds has two Universities and the City College – over 45,000 students in rented accomodation in total; yet there are three of us who do damn near all of it. I don’t mind, the rest of the Leeds lads (who won’t sign up to UKW…..) are missing out because they can’t organise a billing system.
The balance is about 1/3rd private work and 2/3rds property and it works very well for us.
We sell the ISE machine with confidence and it’s a steady revenue stream.
The point is to play to the strengths of your area and customer base – working out what that is can take a bit of time and a lot of organisation, but get it right and the business will be busy and profitable.

I am bit puzzled to your questions are you talking about your own capabilities or are you talking about a management position?I left out the reason I was asking as I did’nt want it to divert attention from the question. The reason I ask is that I am taking someone on in the new year (Washing machine repairer) and we have 5 months in which to get him trained up in a diverse area, to add more strings to our bow. We have plans regarding that but it never harms to do a bit of ‘brain storming’!
A White Goods business near to me has gone from strength to strength over the last 2 years and concentrates almost exclusively now on retail finished goods and spares, and has over the last 2 years taken on 3 new staff to process and package sales of spares from ebay, amazon and others. 5 or 6 years ago they were heavily into repairs and even recon machines, now they keep their hands clean and all drive nice cars!

penguin is also correct , 1 letting agent we made over £12,000 in one year from ( thats n ot all profit btw)
If you can handle the invoicing etc getting on with letting agents and the likes can be very rewarding.

careful though
i do work for a number of letting agents
constant work good money
noticed i wasnt doing as much normal chargable work
which is ok until the letting agents have a new manager and he wants to get a different company to do the work
so i would advise to try and get in with the letting agents but keep your adverts going so you still get average joe phoning

just in caseThere is nothing wrong in looking after the staff at the letting agencies, a few bottles of wine, the odd smelly candle etc at Christmas, keeps em sweet. 😉
