ParticipantDrum doesn’t rotate, but I can hear the drain pump running. Not sure if it’s the same motor or not.
Seems to have been making a few unusual noises over the last few weeks (difficult to describe)
Anyway, is there anything obvious to look for? Are faults symptoms like this likely to be within economic repair?

Reading he forums here, I suspect this may be brushes on the main motor.
Are ‘compatible’ brushes to be avoided? They’re LOT less expensive (£4 vs £34!!)
There’s also an option for genuine brushes in plastic carriers. Should this be necessary either, or should the replacement brushes go into the old holders ok?

Yep that sounds favourite
The brushes are only available without the brush holders, and the genuine ones are usually slightly superior although we have fitted plenty of pattern ones without problems.
One point to note, when the motor is assembled in the factory there is a tang bent in to hold the brush for the armature to be inserted. I have found the pattern brushes are often a tad longer than the originals and don’t slide completely past the tang when you push them in (usually only one side and always the one by the suspension leg! 😕 )
If you haven’t done this before i’d thoroughly recommend removing the motor to do it or it can be a nightmare of a fiddle…when you slide the new brushes in check that they are free to slide easily all the way in. If one or both meet resistance and ‘grab’ then you need to look down the inside of the holder, locate the tang and carefully ease it back (bend it lol) with a screwdriver 😉

OK…
So the way to get to the motor is from underneath tipping the machine at 45 deg, right? Am I going to have probs if I lay the machine completely on it’s side given the drum suspension system?
If I take the motor off (held on by 4 bolts it seems) what’s the best approach to removing and then replacing the drum belt? Just try to ease it off and on whilst rotating the drum (a bit like a tyre on a car wheel?) with the motor still attached? Or unbolt the motor releasing belt tension, and bolt it back later whist the belt is already in position?
I can’t quite see it properly at the moment, but what’s the process of replacing the brushes given they’re in brush holders? Are the brush holders removable (and need removing) withought dissasembling the motor? Or should the brushes just come out from the sides/end of the holders (presumambly retained in the holders by a clip or such like)?
Would be good to know what I’m trying to achieve, rather than just experimenting and getting into a pickle. Not done this job before, but I’m an engineer at heart, and know about electrical stuff 🙂

Not done this job before, but I’m an engineer at heart, and know about electrical stuff 🙂We can’t give detailed ‘how-to’ instructions (see forum rules) but the belt is the first and last thing you need to do…they are elasticated and quite tight but you seem to have worked out how to deal with that correctly.
Once you tip it over all will be revealed but it’s good practice not to tip it over horizontal…you may get away without damaging other components, you may not.
Having got the motor off have a good close look at the tags on the brushes, they are what secure them in their holders…it’s a bit of a knack to get them in and out but once you’ve done one you’ll wonder what the fuss was all about but also realise why they are a PITA to do in situ! 😉
Plug out at all times of course :zap:

The tags seem to be bent metal rather than sprung so should I be careful not to break them as I bend them out the way and back after replacing the brush, or am I looking for a technique for removing the cover without having to bend the tags?
Looking for a steer here rather than detailed ‘how to’ as I didn’t know about the forum rule, but want to respect it.

Ah… Sorted that issue 🙂
Now damn brush seems too big to come out…

Just slide the tags to find the slots cut in them…have a look at the new set if you have them already?
You certainly don’t need to bend anything 😉

Is it normal for the motor to be a bit noisier while new brushes bed in? The ‘wistle’ from the bushes on the comutator (or maybe this is the speed controller I’m hearing) is somewhet louder than it used to be, and there’s a *little* bit of what I can oly describe as a harshness/grating at lower motor speeds (nothing appears to be rubbing, and I was careful to make sure the brushes went in the right way). They are patern brushes (not Bosch originals).
