After reading similar posts but not dealing directly with our model (Ice and Water dispenser) I was about to go out and buy all the various sensors mentioned (defrost etc…) but….

Our freezer is trying to defrost, it’s showing different temps on different occasions, after resetting it (turning on and off) it does go down to -20 but then the temp rises after a while, the ice cubes are defrosted but we have some ice blocks in the bottom of the freezer that aren’t defrosting and it does still feel cold.

The fridge side evaporator was iced up a little (fan catching) and we removed it (several days ago) and defrosted it and it now seems OK and the fridge is working fine.

When I removed the bottom panel on the rear to clean it out and check, all looked OK, BUT there was a fan in the back that seemed like it was trying to start up but kept stopping. (Runs for 5 secs then stops for 9 secs, runs for 5 secs etc….)

I have done the Diagnostics check and it’s returning:

9: F-Fan Error (Motor Fan in Freezer)
10: C-Fan Error (Motor Fan in Unit with COMP)
4: R-Fan Error (Motor Fan in Fridge)

It looks like (to a layman) the fan is trying to work and maybe blowing enough cold air into the freezer to keep the bottom of it cold but then cuts out? just a guess of course.

The fan (evaporator) in the fridge side is working and it seems strange that all 3 (fans) would go at the same time.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Leon

p.s. FYI: We have had the unit 8yrs and up until last week worked faultlessly (no previous repairs).

Been a long hard week!and not finished yet 🙁
Sounds strange that the condenser fan(the one behind at the back) is switching on and off,it usually comes on with the compressor and stays on until the compressor is switched off, it’s wires likely go to the compressor terminals, the plastic box on the side of the motor.if they do go there it should run continously as it dissapates all the heat that is taken out of the food, the black radiator device must be free of dust check it from the front too. There are some fans controlled by a sensor in the condensor but not on this one.
    Switch off before touching.
The condenser fan sounds to me like it’s part of the problem,is it free when you spin it with your finger, does the shaft move in it’s bearings ? it could be worn afer 8 years

seems unlikely all 3 fans fail simultaneously – more likely to be a main pcb fault

You said fridge fan is working,is the freezer side one working?

    Re: Samsung SR2229CVW Defrost problem….

Thanks for the replies and sorry for delay in getting back but eldest daughter is moving to Uni and, yes I’ve turned into Dad Transport ; )

I just went to check the condenser fan and it wasn’t actually turning but did start up again after I checked what spimps asked me to check, it is turning freely by hand and doesn’t feel loose in it’s bearings (a little play but wouldn’t say it’s really worn).

I haven’t had time to check the (freezer) fan but will do later tonight or tomorrow, just to let you know I did take out the top sensor (The one that says ‘Temperature Sensor’) to take it to a shop that sent me a wrong one for comparison and when I took it out the temp on the front panel went quickly to temp set, then after putting it back in it’s stayed at the temp set but flashes. (Addendum: After resetting the FF the temp on the freezer panel now shows a stable 7°)

Also my wife put a half bottle (500ml) of water in the bottom draw to see if it would freeze as the bottom of the freezer is cold and although it took a couple of days it has frozen?

Luckily the fridge is still working as we’d be up the creek without a paddle as there are 7 people in the house and it’s the most important appliance in the house, so all suggestions are appreciated.

    🙂

Just an update to let anyone know, the Freezer is now at 8 and went down to 6 yesterday so it’s fluctuating slightly and the half bottle in the top bottom drawer is still frozen?

So still baffled and waiting to spend money on some parts that will let us buy more food.

Not had chance to check fan, daughter has only just finished moving into Halls, which I am going to do now.

    Thanks.

    Re: Samsung SR2229CVW Defrost problem….

    Hi

It’ll be the defrost heater or thermal fuse….if the evaperator does not reach +17oc then the unit will defrost..by switching off then back on it resets the main board..it wont be the fans or pcb.

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks for the pointer, which one would you suggest replacing first ? or both and from what I’ve seen these are both end user replacements, but correct me if I’m wrong.

    Re: Samsung SR2229CVW Defrost problem….

    Hi

The first thing is to test the components…thermal fuse or heater.

    Hi Bryan,

What would I need to do that and what is the proper procedure?

    Many thanks.

p.s. Funny how you get used to things, it’s been so long now, do we even need a freezer….Yeeeeees from screams of children….Ice Cream, Ice Cream… : )

    Re: Samsung SR2229CVW Defrost problem….

OK, managed to get hold of a Mastech Meter and quickly checked the following in the Freezer section:

    Freezer Side

    Top:
Thermal Fuse for continuity = OK (Well the meter beeps)

    Middle:
    Main Heater = 263Ω
    Drain Heater = 2.13 KΩ

    Bottom:
Defrost Sensor = 14 KΩ (fluctuates to just below)

and the fan in the freezer is working.

The White Sensor (Blue wires & behind the blue cover) is showing as just over 5 K at room temperature and goes down when you warm it up.

The readings were taken with the evaporator covered in ice, just defrosting now then will check again.

So would it confirm that it is the Main Defrost heater as suggested by Bryan ? or….?

Going to check the Fridge side later. [Done. see below.]

I used the information from the “A rough guide to the Samsung RS21 fridge freezer problems” as a guide so don’t know if the values are the same for our Samsung but seem to be, except for the Main Defrost Heater! ?

Top: This is the Thermal Fuse simply test for continuity

Middle: This is the defrost heater connection and the resistance values should read:
    Main Heater = 480Ω
    Drain Heater = 2KΩ

Bottom: Is the NTC Defrost Sensor which should read 13.3 K ohms @ 0oC (This value will change depending on the temperature!)

    Addendum 15.25pm

Just checked the sensors again now there is no ice on it at all.

    Freezer Side.

    Top:
Thermal Fuse for continuity = OK (Well the meter beeps)

    Middle:
    Main Heater = 263Ω
    Drain Heater = 2.13 KΩ

    Bottom:
Defrost Sensor = 10.3 KΩ [Just 15.40pm gave the evaporator a quick blast with a hair dryer and the Defrost Sensor went down to 5 KΩ, as it says in the article it is variable, does this mean it’s working as it should be?]

So all the same except for the Defrost Sensor or is the difference within any tolerances?

    Fridge Side.

    Top:
Thermal Fuse for continuity = OK (Well the meter beeps)

    Middle:
    Main Heater = 585Ω <<< ?
    Drain Heater = 2.13 KΩ

    Bottom:
    Defrost Sensor = 11 KΩ

    Thanks

they all look like normal readings

Hi, weird! but since doing all the tests on Weds and putting it all back together it has worked since then!?!

    Freezer = -18
    Fridge = 3

No variations at all, food is freezing and Ice Maker is working as it should be.

Any Ideas what went/going on ?

    Thanks

    Re: Samsung SR2229CVW Defrost problem….

    Hi, again,

It seems it’s still having defrost problems, as the fridge fan keeps freezing up, twice since last post, so seeing as the readings were apparently normal! any ideas?

If it is a defrost sensor would it be logical to replace the fridge one first and are they the same as it has one for each side?

    Thanks

    Leon
