    Hello

I hope this post follows the rules – if not then please tell me.

I have a Bosch NCT615C01/01 electric hob, with three problems:

    1. Switching on the rear left hotplate causes the RCD to trip in the fusebox.
    2. The right rear hotplate doesn’t get as hot as I think it should.
    3. The left front hotplate doesn’t get as hot as I think it should.

Do you think there’s a common cause of these problems, or are they all separate?

I’d be grateful for any advice anyone can provide.

    Thanks.

31 views, in three days, and not one single comment – is that normal for this forum?

If so, I don’t see the point of it.

I would suggest that the hotplate being used when it trips is most likely at fault. As for them not getting as hot as you think they should, that is rather more difficult to comment on as I get people say all the time things don’t work as the user thinks they ought to & it then turns out they are working to manufacturers spec.

Thank you, TheSpinDoctor, for your reply.

I shall move in the direction of replacing the suspect hotplate.

If I say that the two large hotplates seem to be incapable of boiling water in a saucepan within the normal limits of human patience, whilst the remaining hotplate, a small one, brings water to the boil very quickly, does that give you any confidence that there is a tangible problem?

If so, what’s the list of possible causes of such a problem?

Old, tired hotplates…… It’s knackered. The replacement of all the plates will exceed the cost of replacing the hob.

With regard to your comments about the efficacy of the forum, it’s just that – a forum. Pure pot luck who’s about and may have knowledge of the products posted.

    Re: Bosch hotplate tripping RCD

Thank you, Penguin45, for your reply, but I’m having trouble interpreting it.

Three of the hotplates are three years old, and the fourth is about one year old, so none of them is very old.

Tired? I don’t understand this at all. Do hotplates get tired? Surely they either conduct or they don’t conduct, and the insulation either leaks or doesn’t leak?

Is there not some fault-finding process that a professional repairer would follow in this situation? Surely they wouldn’t just label a 3-year old hob as being old and tired, and advocate replacing the entire thing, would they?

The particular knowledge I lack is why a hotplate can heat up less then when it was new. Does it mean that its resistance has increased, so that the power dissipated is less?

BTW, the price I’ve been given for hotplates would be a total of £130 for all four, and on your own web site they’re even less than that. A new hob would be at least £150, so it’s definitely cheaper to repair it, given that one hotplate is still working.

Do you think that the switches/knobs could be at all faulty?

Regarding the pot luck with the forum, I merely asked if the absence of replies and abundance of views was normal. I guess you’re saying that it is.

    Hi Iconic.

The plates are most likely failing when put under load but may well give you a good reading when tested using an insulation resistance meter from cold. Has this been done yet by yourself? If not, please isolate the product from the mains electric supply before doing so.

I must be honest & say that I usually work on another manufactuers products from Bosch so I am not familiar with your specific product so this may be a common fault for Bosch technicians. Are they solid, ceramic or halogen plates?

I must say though that if the replacement costs around £150 & that if you need to replace 3 of the 4 hotplates & each plate cost about £30-£35 per plate, would it not be better for you in the long run to replace the product which would be covered by a Manufacturers warranty for 12 months or more in some cases.

    Re: Bosch hotplate tripping RCD

id like ot add weigh to spin doctors comment, if the difference between a repair and (similar quality) replacement happens to be less than £50 my company always reccomends replacing. unknowingly to most customers manufacturers spares only tend to come with a 3 month gurantee. so a 12 month guarantee for an extra £50 over total cost of a repair is more than recommended!!!
