ParticipantHi
Reference my previous query…http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … highlight=
I’ve now fitted a new heater element but it still trips the MCB during the heating cycle on 40 degree, and hotter, wash programmes (the 30 degree wash is ok). The main RCB doesn’t trip so I’m assuming that this is an over current fault and not an earth leakage issue.
Can anyone suggest what else might be causing this?
Many thanks,

Hi,
Its a standard 30A MCB (radial circuit with 4 x 13A switched sockets). Other equipment on this circuit are a fridge/freezer, microwave and a tumble dryer but it still trips the MCB with all other equipment disconnected.September 29, 2009 at 8:04 pm #298269bazza500

….and this circuit is protected by an earth leakage circuit breaker as well but this doesn’t trip?

Correct. I’ve also pressed the test button on the RCB to check that it is working properly.

Mmmm….
What I would do next then is try the washing machine in a different circuit to illiminate a faulty MCB and house wiring in this radial cct( or if you could get your hands on a clamp meter to test the current the appliance is drawing).
This to be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure it is the washing machine alone causing this.
If it still trips then it’s time to start checking wiring for shorts between L and N starting on Heater cct as this seems to be the most obvious thing.
Possibly suppressor starting to breakdown.
Power off if you are going in!!

I’ve already swapped the MCB for a spare one (new and unused) so I’m fairly confident that the MCB is not at fault. Getting my hands on a clamp meter could be a problem so what I’ll do next is to plug the machine into a different circuit to make absolutely sure its not the house wiring. This will have to wait for the weekend as I am unfortunately away from home all week.
After I changed the heater element I tried it on a 40 degree programme and timed how long it would take to trip…. the first one happened after about 7 minutes, I then reset the MCB and it tripped again after about 10 seconds, After a second MCB reset it carried on quite happily until it tripped a third time at 12 minutes. Again I reset the MCB with another trip after about 10 seconds but following one further reset it carried on quite happily to the end of the programme. This seems to suggest that it is tripping at very specific points in the wash cycle, i.e. perhaps when something else in the system is switching but I can’t think what! Any suggestions?
