    Hi

I have just acquired what appeared to be a fully working and spotless WFO2867/15 but on closer inspection it seems to have a strange rust problem.

What I can only describe as small slivers or flakes of a dark brown residue of coffee grain consistency is present in the waste water from the machine.
Rubbing a flake between finger and though gives an almost greasy orange smear and smells metallic.
My conclusion is rust from somewhere, but where in the machine?

I have done a number of service washes at high temperature and I have removed the heater element to thoroughly inspect the tub as best I can.
    (and with a torch)
I found a few more rusty crumbs on the base of the tub(ie under the heater element) and cleaned these out.
I had also spotted a rusty water drip mark on the stainless drum which rubbed off -only spotted this once though.
The machine is quiet and no strange noises that could suggest a bearing problem….so I am puzzled…where is it coming from?
The problem has gradually reduced-two washes this morning and my tea strainer only picked up a couple of small flakes.
To all the experienced Bosch guys is this something you have seen before
-is the bearing about to go or is the spider perhaps rusting?
The other option is that perhaps there was something (wire or otherwise) trapped which has now almost dissappeared.
Has anyone seen this before on what is a German built machine of around 4 years old ie is there a known design fault?

Thanks in advance for any input!

rusty water or oily run marks?

sounds like bearing failure to me

With the earlier service washes I would say the waste looked to have a slight brown/orange tinge…..the later washes now just give me the occasional brown flake.

I cant decide if I have got rid of something that had been between the drums and has now more or less broken up and been flushed out or if the bearing seal has gone and the machine should go to land fill.

I read somewhere on the forum that the spider can corrode etc so I was hoping one of the Bosch engineers who see this machine type regularly would know what the problem is?
At this time there is no play in the drum and no noise -surely if the bearing seal had gone it would sound like a bag of spanners now @1400rpm?

    Thanks again

To try and help identify the source I have attempted a couple of photos.
I am no David Bailey but hopefully the images may get me an answer?

First is a few “rust” crumbs from this mornings wash…

    and the next smeared out

If the conclusion is replace the bearings can someone advise the part number and if a complete kit is available including tub seal.

    Many thanks in advance

That definitely looks like something that has gone into the drum with the washing and is now corroding.

Even when main bearings fail its not common to get marks on the clothes unless it has been run into the ground.

Some areas have a mains water supply that has a high iron content that can also lead to rust marks but not usually lumps lke that TBH.

On the odd occasion the bolts and clamp plates that hold the drum to the spider can also corrode in that way, not sure if this machine uses that method to secure the drum to the support though. The drum spider is usually an alloy so it doesn’t rust.

    Thanks for the reply.

The number of lumps has gradually decreased with the number of washes
which also suggest to me that there is something between the drums has corroded and is getting washed out.

Alternatively the bearings are about to fail…but no noise …or play in the drum….and I reckon I could have filled an egg cup by now with all the flakes(surely failure by now)
that have come out of the machine.

I have run a few service washes with soda crystals at 90 degrees -does anyone have other recommendations re cleaning the system out?

Have any of the folk that work with the Bosch machines a lot seen these symptoms before?

    Thanks again

I agree with my colleague iadom on this one in that it’s definitely associated with some ‘foreign body’ being introduced during a wash or perhaps via the soap drawer? Bra wires, metal collar stiffeners, zip fasteners, buckles, nails and screws are a regular cause.

You can rule out drum bearings from what you’ve already told us or indeed drum shaft fixings (as in this case it has a drum/shaft assembly made using non-ferrus metals.

I’m certain that in the fullness of time it will ‘all come out in the wash’ hopefully sooner rather than later. Meanwhile just one small question if I may?

Have you checked the brown debris you’ve retrieved with a magnet?

Thanks for your replies and re-assurance that it is unlikley to be the bearings.

Missed the obvious so will hunt for a magnet…..

Will keep monitoring the strainer for more granules

Like panning for gold but in reverse? :-0)
