ParticipantTwo weeks ago I thought my BrandT fridge-freezer (Model – COA 380 AU ~ 6-7 years old) had packed up as a result of a compresser failure. However, now that I am back from my business trip I thought that prior to disposing of the unit I’d give at clean – a lot of unpleasant stuff as grown on the inside.
I decided – for no rhyme nor reason – to switch on the power. Now I find that the compressor unit is operating – the rear of the fridge is cold and ice is forming within the freezer unit. The interior light operates, the indicator lights are operating – I can hear the compressor running; the radiator at the rear is warm. I am wondering now if the problem is the compressor or perhaps maybe the control circuit board. Any thoughts from the engineers?
I am loathed to dispense with this unit – I have been looking for a replacement but I find most of the models available have a much smaller freezer capacity. Indeed the frost free version seem to lose a third of the freezer capacity to what I do not know. The best capacity model I found to date is manufactured by Prestige (on sale at £480).

the prestige is almost certainly a chinese made comet own brand special, i would avoid as ive recently had a few calls about short lived frigidaires that seem to share the same carcass. of course they may have different compressors etc but id still be warey.
first thign would be to note the compressor activity, and effectiveness.
first put a thermometer in the fridge and in the freezer.
have a clock nearby and for 2-3 hours in an evening note when the compressor kicks in and kicks out and back in. should be approx every 25-30 mins for about 5-10 mins… note the temp of the fridge and freezer compartments at the beginning and end of your noting, and do this for 2-3 days.
report back with results…

Hello Gandh1,
Thank you for your comments, I am extending my search for a replacement unit. In the meantime, a thermometer is on the purchase list for today’s shopping.
However, I have not heard the compressor unit on the fridge-freezer since Thursday. The the tray for ice cubes I put in on Wednesday night had melted by Thursday evening.
