Participantalways referred our fridge repair equiries to our affiliated indie refrigerant engineer, however for much of the undercounter stuff, the customers dont seem to be contacting him (im guessing because they dont want to pay a £60+ call out fee for him to just write it off) have chatted to him about giving us a crash course on it but that was gonna happen over a year ago 😉 apparently hes FAAAAAR too busy on all the american ref we refer to him!
just wondered if there was any simple abc guide to checking simple basic fridges and freezers in order to clarify if they would be worth fixing… in which case we can write off the machines without any hassle for customers, and write off the call out against a replacement purchase?
is there like a standard process – i,e if compressor doesnt run, try replacement t/stat, if still fails, try comp relay? etc

a) If the motor’s running but it’s not getting cold scrap it.
b) If the motor’s not running but it’s hot and the fridge isn’t getting cold scrap it.
c) If the motor’s not running and it’s cold check the thermostat.
Not the thermostat? Phone your friend.

Macmillan do a good basic one written by N Cook called Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology. There are many others available if youy visit a decent library.
Good place to start and then you can take it further if you wish.November 9, 2009 at 11:18 pm #303045gandh1

comp failure?

not ask the [whitegoodsuk] audience then ? 😛 Yes of course; that’s wot we’re here for. Don’t try 50:50 though; you’ll fit a lot of wrong parts 🙁

is that your final answer?

System repairs, i.e. regassing, compressor changing, etc is usually straight forward. Most colleges will do evening courses on this.
However;
don’t forget to do your refrigerant handling course,
and you must reclaim all gas for safe disposal
and you must have all the tools, gauges, etcBut, that is the easy bit.
knowing how to fault find, what with thermisters, pcb’s, fan motors, defrost heaters & timers, thats the hard bitHTH

A Pressurise with OFN to leak test, find leak and if possible repair leak, evacuate system and regas.
B Very often a thermostat. On older apppliances where a heater is fitted behind the evap, when the thermostat goes o/c (corrosion leads to gas in thermostat capillary leaking out) heater is energised full time, leading to heat.
Could also be PTC/Relay or compressor.
C does not make any sense!
Do you mean if the compressor is cold?

Yes, just realised my comments b and c were ambiguous. B should have said that if the motor’s hot and not running scrap the appliance, and c should have said if the motor’s cold and not running check the thermostat.
