Hi there – hoping someone might be able to help!

We own a Hoover H160e Time 1600 washing machine which we’ve been running daily for nearly 6 years. In the past couple years parts have started failing and I’ve already replaced the pump motor (due to water damage / corrosion), door hinge, main PCB / logic board and most recently the brushes (approx 2 months ago).

Just when I thought the machine was running quite well it appears that the main motor has now also packed in. 😡

The first symptom was that there was a bit of a dodgy hot smell. It was only minor and I wasn’t totally convinced it was coming from the washing machine. I let it finish its cycle which it did ok as usual.

Promptly forgetting about the hot / slightly burny smell we’d noticed earlier, we carried on using the machine daily for a couple of weeks with no problems.

Then yesterday my partner noticed that the WM had been stuck on the same part of a rinse cycle for about two hours. I checked basic things but couldn’t spot anything obvious. I tried a few other programs but on each the WM refused to spin up to speed and wouldn’t progress further through the program.

Fearing a faulty logic board (again) or hopefully just worn brushes (unlikely asonly 2 months old) I shuffled the WM out for a look inside.

I was shocked to see that on the floor, where the WM had been sitting, was a pile of what looked like little bits of metal. On closer inspection they turned out to be tiny bits of wire coated in blobs of melted solder which had been extruded into long thin stands as if flung with some force! 😯

Upon taking the back off the WM, I was immediately surprised at the heat been thrown back at me even though it’d been unplugged for an hour or so.

Quickly guessed that the motor had failed and removed it for closer inspection. One end (the armature / communicator / brushes end) looked absolutely fine, but the other end was a mess! Blobs of melted solder, bits of wire sticking out , little bits of metal missing. Wow – wasn’t expecting that! Suprisingly though the motor still appeared to turn fairly smoothly.

So, my question is, what is likely to have caused this? 😕

I’m hoping all I need to do is spend £100 on a new motor but maybe something else caused the motor to fail and I’d be better purchasing a new machine??

Unfortunately budget is very tight and the cheapest most economical option is very tempting but without knowing the cause I’m worried I may end up burning the new motor and £100 – not sure what to do.

My little’uns sicky clothes are building up so I need to be relatively quick…. I don’t think mum-in-law would appreciate too much washing form us!

    Hugely grateful for any advice!

    Cheers
    Stef

Re: Hoover H160e faulty / overheated motor. Replace or new W

A lot of motors appear to survive a brush change, but fail shortly afterwards. The “bedding-in” process for the brushes can generate a lot of heat, especially as most users go straight back to full load laundering rather than giving the machine a few light loads to settle the brushes first.

6 year old Hoover? With family use, it’s probably done its time in all honesty. They aren’t all that good.

Motor is HERE if you decide to repair.

Hiya – thanks for your reply.

I’m going to take your advice and get a new machine.
I like the sound and ethics of the ISE machines but unfortunately I don’t have the budget right now to stretch to over 400 notes. I realise in the long run it would be the more sensible option but my bank balance says otherwise.

So, in light of that, are there any cheaper , perhaps sub £300, machines anyone can recommend?

    Thanks
    Stef

    Hi Stef

If you want a machine to give you six years plus for your money then go for the Bosch WAE24164 Net prices seem to suggest you will get one for just under the three hundred. Anything cheaper and it just won`t last anywhere near.

    HTH 🙂

    Thanks for that don,

I found it for a few quid under £300 here and there but by the time delivery and removal of old machine was factored in those cheaper deals started getting more expensive.

In the end I ordered the Bosch WAE24164 you suggested from http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk
which included free rapid/express delivery for this thursday and removal of old machine for a grand total £317.

That works out around £20-50 quid cheaper than other online retailers if you include delivery etc. Curry’s wanted £470 for it! Shows it pays to shop around!

Thanks for your help… my missus is happy again! 😉
