ParticipantHello,
My machine is about 4.5 years old and been working fine until this week when it’s really really noisy when it spins. My first thought was to check the drain pump but I cant find it! Can anyone tell me where it’s located on the Hotpoint Aquarius WF250? I have the instructions but there is no mention of it and it’s only advice on noisy spinning is that it’s unstable but it’s been fine until now and not been moved.
Any advice on where the drain pump is and how to check it or what else might be causing the noise would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

If it is a problem with the pump then it will be noisy when it drains, even before it goes into spin.
If it only noisy when it starts to reach full spin speed then it could be the bearings, loose concrete balance weights or foreign bodies inside the drum.
If you open the door and spin the drum vigorously by hand does it make any noise.
Has the noise materialised suddenly or has it been noisy for a while?
Your machine should have the pump at the rear, behind the small lower back panel. Be sure to remove the mains plug if you intend to go inside.

Hello and thanks,
There is no noise if I spin the drum by hand.
It’s only started making the noise in the last week, previously it’s been fine and even now it still washes okbut it’s incredibly noisy.
I will listen to see if it’s noisy before spinning next time it’s on and will check the pump at the rear to see if there is anything inside.
If it is the bearings, is it worth fixing or is a new machine needed?
Thanks again!November 29, 2009 at 6:32 pm #305183iadom

If you set the machine to a spin programme the pump will kick in and run for at least 30 to 40 seconds even more before the machine goes into spin. If it is noisy at this time then you may well have a foreign body in the pump.
It will not make any noise on the wash cycle if it is the pump except for the first few seconds when the pump is switched on for a short burst. If it is quiet when you spin it by hand then it is likely that your bearings are OK.
If you are taking the back off to check the pump then you can visually inspect the back of the drum, if it looks clean without signs of rusty marks down the back, your bearings will like as not be in good order.

Hello again,
We have now had the back off and checked the hidden drain pump which did have a 10pence in it. Thought that was the answer, however, it’s not as it’s still making a very loud noise on “rinse and spin” and especially “final spin”. It’s got worse as I’ve continued to use it. Today I can see that the drum moves freely from front to back of the machine and the rubber seal is looking a bit “baggy”. So I guess the noise is coming from the drum banging on the front and back of the machine as it spins. Do I assume this is the bearings? (sorry if this is obvious – am total novice).
The machine is 4.5 years old, is it worth getting it repaired or should I get a new one? If it is worth a repair then can you recommend engineers in DA7 (Bexleyheath area)? As a mother of 2 small boys the machine is essential so want to get it fixed or a new one ordered ASAP!
Thanks as always!December 8, 2009 at 4:37 pm #305185iadom

The drum should move back and forwards quite easily. Major bearing failure causes the drum to flop up and down at the front if you lift the inner drum. You do really need to get it looked at ASAP.
Worth checking the two large concrete balance weights if you can, the one on top of the drum is easy to see but there is also another one attached to the outer drum, low down at the front. If you tilt the machine back against a cupboard or wall you should be able to see if that is loose.
Be sure to unplug the machine and get someone to hold it whilst you look under.

Thank you. I think it’s time to call someone out to look at it and see if it can be fixed, it’s definitely got worse in the last week and now the rubber has gone all “baggy round the inside of the door I’m a bit scared to use it. Seeing I can’t do without it I need to find someone quick. Will use the repairs section on here.
Thanks again for your advice. -
