My Fridge Freezer is approx 3 years old and has just started to act strangely. First off there was a clicking noise coming from the top of the fridge near the light casing, then on opening the fridge door the lights would not come on. The clicking noise eventually stopped after an hour. The fridge and freezer seem to be cool/frozen but the fridge light does not always come on when opening the door. Some times I need to turn off the power and then turn it back on to get the lights to work which makes me think that the power is not on continuously. The freezer does not always make the whirring sound that it usually makes when the door is open and only does when the lights in the fridge are working. For information, the fridge freezer is located in a cold unheated room. Any feedback would be appreciated. If you need any further info, please let me know.

I have exactly the same problem? Same age fridge too..

I’ve read somewhere that its simply a relay sticking on the control board behind the panel at the top… but am trying to find out a little more information before tackling it.

Luckily for me I have a chest freezer also.. and have been able to empy the freezer part of the fridge/freezer which appears to help the situation??

If i find anything out.. I’ll post back.. and will keep checking back for answer to help also 🙂

It would be covered un the 5 years parts warranty.. but at £105 for a call out.. and only a 3 month warranty.. if it came to it.. i’d rather buy a cheapo fridge freezer and get 12 months lol..

It doesn’t say much for these units really? I had a mistral before this one.. and that had issues around this age too??

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

Right, well i’ve been searching the net.. and only found a single reference to the relay board in the top of the freezer which is “clicking”. I’ve had the top open and the relay is a NAIS JS1-B-12V-F-H111.

I’ve seen in here on UKWG for dishwasher etc.. would replacing this relay fix the potential problem anyone???

It would appear that the freezer is doing its cooling thing… but when it should be switching it off the relay usually clicks once (when working ok).. but has been continuously clicking… and after a period of time simply turns the whole lot off???

Elsewhere on the net it was implied that the relay is “sticking”. Could this be the case??

and if so… where can i get my hands on one of the relays???

    Thanks in advance.

    I have the same problem.

I can easily get hold of the part from for example http://www.mouser.com

However, I am not sure whether this is a faulty relay or is clicking because of some other problem e.g sticking fan.

Has anyone tried replacing the relay yet?

Not yet for me mate, but i no what you mean..

i’m trying to get the board over to a mate who’s a bit of a tech bod on such things.. hopefully he’ll be able to identify the problem?

But i await any other info from others with the problem as it seems to be a VERY common problem.. odd their appear no/very few solutions about?

at time my F/F is working ok.. cooling/freezing etc.. the compressor kicking in and out fans on and off etc… so they all work lol.. seems like a load issue maybe? who knows.. i’ll post more when i find out more..

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

I have posted a problem I have on an Indesit fridge freezer model BAN12NF which has exactly the same problem, maybe the board is the same one ? The fridge is two years old and the original owner tells me he had this happen under warranty and the call out technician did some “adjustment” to the board but did not replace it, his theory is that transporting the fridge may have moved the board and started the problem again. ? I did get a support line suggestion to check the solder connections on the bioard and re-solder those on the relays ?? The board looks like it costs 80 pounds which is probably more that the fridge is worth so I would also be very interested in any “fix” solution.

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

Well my mate has had a riiiiiight good look at the board, and aside from some “dodgey” looking joints on an IC there were no apparent issues with it.
The relay was removed and test and all seems fine..

the fridge freezer is still clicking away.. but hopefully i’ll get this resolved with enough information to help others.. and ultimately help myself WHEN it happens again 🙁 as sadly.. i realise hot point is now a brand in future which is best avoided..

I’ll post back tho. .on any findings.. and watch in hope of a resolution.

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

I just replaced the relay on the control board of my Indesit which has exactly the same problem but it did not work. Fridge starts up OK and compressor seems to run fine, then after a few minutes the clicking starts and it shuts down after about 30 seoconds, I can feel the compressor rapidly stopping and starting in sequenece with the clicking.. I don’t want to spend more money on the fridge than it is worth, so if anyone knows what else may be wrong on the conrol bard or elsewhere please reply otherwise unfortunately this otherwise nice two year old fridge freezer will be off to the dump.

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

I too have this problem with an Indesit BAN 12 NF (UK). The buzzing started 1 month after the years guarantee. Hotpoint & Indesit are owned by the same company. Seems a common fault with both – seems like dodgy components or design – best to avoid these companies in the future.

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

    Hi All

All a relay does is use a small current to switch a larger current (usually), so if its clicking on and off, what is it supplying current to ? Is the item drawing excessive current and some other feedback loop is switching the relay off to stop excessive current being drawn and damaging another component. If its supplying power to a compessor maybe this is faulty.
If its supplying power to a heater (if its frost free) is this or its connector short circuit ?

Someone has already spotted the problem though – its a Hotpoint owned by indersh*t.

I had a mistral and after getting shafted by having to pay a call out fee for a noddy to come out and only do what his laptop told him to do and not even have a clue how the appliance worked i now wont touch the stuff and advise everyone i know who is thinking of buying any domestic appliance to stay well away from hotpoint and indersit. Incidently i had huge problems with the mistral , caused by useless thermocouples and poor connectors and shoddy assembly. Hotpoint engineers didnt stop to think that hot melt glue goes brittle at -20 in a freezer and shrinks a bit, thus alowing moisture to track down the thermocouple leads via capilary action and effectivly short them out, et voila a freezer that either runs continously or not at all. neat huh ! To coin one of their own tag lines from the early 80’s “thankyou Hotpoint”.

Re: Hotpoint FFP187B power turning on and off

Hi all, I originally started this thread back in November 2009. After a few days my Hotpoint FFP187B started to work again without the clicking and I did not bother to follow up on the thread, sorry. Now, after 6 months I’m at your mercy!! The clicking noise is back with a vengeance and am relying on your help to keep me in cold beer throughout the world cup! Is there any one out there who can help, this is obviously a common problem from the replies. The only additional information I can add is that the fridge was full to the brim on both the occasions when this problem started to happen, could this have anything to do with setting this problem off? The fridge is set to setting number 2 out of 5 as it has always been. Any help would be appreciated.

I replaced the relay and had no effect. Relay is about £5 from Farnell, less on ebay.
    Part is below.
Just read a really interesting post on this problem.. will try this out tomorrow (8/5/17)
