Hi been to one of these that will not wash right. I have found that the lower spray arm will not turn but the top one is working fine. I have checked the spray arm is clear and it’s perfect no bits in it and its free to turn.
    Thanks Ray

The diverter valve unit in the heater box will have failed. Usually the gears jam and the cam drive fails and replacing the complete Heater Unit the only cure.

Thanks Martin for that. I have spoken to the customer again and he has told me that after we left he tried it again and now only the bottom spray arm will work. Can these cause intermitent problems. He has complained that the dishes are still dirty at the end of the cycle and that the soap has not been washed away from the dispenser, but not every time sometimes it does wash ok.
    Thanks again Ray

The flow to the spray arms alternates between top and lower. That’s what the diverter valve in the heater box does. Sounds as though there’s not sufficient spray pressure if detergent not getting washed out. Could be a bit of paper or plastic got into the water flow somewhere and blocking it intermittently. Could try operating with spray arms removed to try and flush it out.

Nah, the gears driving the cam in there slip and stick and sooner than later will give up altogether. New heater box the only cure.

If you like just run the machine and listen to that diverter switching between top and bottom spray arms every 55 seconds with a 5 second ‘silent pause’ between changeover. The constant switching between top and bottom spray happens throughout the entire programme. So during a typical 120 minute cycle it will have done that at least 100 times.

Set your stopwatch and if you don’t hear it change within 55 seconds you will know for sure that its duff. Removing the top spray pipe from above the heater box and you can visually inspect the cam inside. A gentle nudge with a small screwdriver and very often that cam is found to be loose and can be easily moved thus proving the gears are faulty.

Close inspection (with the heater box taken out that is) of the motor drive, gearbox and cam mechanism you will quickly realise how fallible they really are and why they fail constantly. More so than the actual heating element failure I find.

The later series of BSH machines and that diverter device is seperate from the heater. I’ve yet to come across one faulty yet but in the fullness of time I expect the need to carry a few on the van.:D
