ParticipantI have a intergrated Built Under Hygena fridge/ freezer model number APM 6111. The problem I am having is the fridge runs continuosly. During Summer months; no matter what position the stat is on, it just does not stop and will only get as low as 6 °C.
Now it is cooler outside temp, I can get the stat to operate if set at number 1, and this is also at 6 °C . If the stat is turned any higher, or I stock the fridge with cans of beer; the fridge will cool down to 2 °C and not switch off; not even by reducing the thermostat setting.
I recently bought a new stat from UK Whitegoods and this does exactly the same although I can get the temp down to 5 °C but this is with the stat set at absolute minimum.
The stat is connected correctly (I am an electrician) and the capillary tube and probe is routed correctly. The probe is clamped to the rear of the cooling plate.
I have noticed that when the fridge is cycling ok; the cooling plate is cold with beads of water on it but not iced. What makes it run continuos, is when the cooling plate is iced up and the temp probe is also iced.
The freezer box does freeze but I wouldn’t want to store any food in it for any length of time. I have also checked the door seal and does look and appear ok.
Any help in resolving this matter would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Sorry but it sounds as if it’s a classic case of not vented properly at install and I’d be surprised if the compressor is cycling correctly. It sounds as if it’s cutting out on the compressor (pot) overheat and, therefore, probably knackered I’m afraid.
If it’s any consolation it’s very, very common that these machines were installed with inadequate ventilation.
It’s not cycling correctly at all, the evaporator plate should ice over and defrost only on a defrost cycle, which it’s not doing. If it’s running continuously then it’s not achieving temperature, cutting out on the overheat then cutting back in as the pot cools off. It’ll go on like that until the pot fails but will never actually achieve a stable temperature that is safe to store food in to any degree.
This is what’s causing the light ice formation and then it disappears quite quickly I’d imagine.
Sorry it’s not good news.

Thank you for your reply. I am sure the compressor is cycling with the stat as it can keep a constant temp of 5/6 °C with the stat at min and I haven’t heard the compressor switch off at all when it cools to 2 °C.
I had heard of the poor ventilation you mentioned and as a result of this; I have fitted two 90 mm fans on the floor under the fridge to aid circulation. It certainly blows out heat from the gap under the worktop.
Thanks again for your response.December 2, 2009 at 7:44 am #305434spimps

Is the 5/6 amn avaerage temp as you mention it goes down to 2?Is it a good thermometer (not the dial type)
Basic fridges like this rely on convection for air circulation in the fridge and different temps of several degrees can be found on different shelves, door shelves are the worst place to put a thermometer.
Remove fridge from fittings and thorughly clean all dust from condenser etc, then run it free standing for a couple of days to test it.If it’s still the same you have as KW says a system fault. -
